Crankshaft & Main Bearings: Installation

  1. Install upper main bearings in cylinder block. Ensure oil hole is aligned and bearing is properly seated. Lubricate bearings with engine oil.
  2. Install crankshaft in block. Install main bearing caps in original location with arrow toward front of engine.
CAUTION: Ensure proper type bearing is installed. All upper bearings have oil grooves EXCEPT No. 3 (center) bearing. All lower bearings do not have oil grooves. Install main bearing cap in original location with arrow facing toward front of engine.
  3. Check oil clearance using Plastigage method. Tighten bolts to specification. Remove main bearing caps. Clearance must be within specification. If oil clearance exceeds specification, replace bearings or crankshaft.
  4. Reinstall bearing caps and move crankshaft forward and backward to align thrust bearings. Tighten bearing cap bolts to specification. Ensure crankshaft rotates freely with main bearing caps installed. Check crankshaft end play. See CRANKSHAFT , MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS table at end of this article.
  5. Install pistons and connecting rod assemblies, bearings and rod caps. Ensure components are installed in original location. Tighten rod nuts to specification. Ensure connecting rods move freely on crankshaft when rotating crankshaft.
  6. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification.
