Fuel Gauge Sending Unit

  1. Disconnect wire from fuel gauge sending unit terminal. Attach wire to a known good sending unit. Connect a jumper wire between sending unit fuel pick-up tube and a good ground.
  2. Retain float arm of sending unit at its empty stop and turn ignition on. After 2 minutes, fuel gauge should read "EMPTY". Move float arm to its full stop. After 2 minutes fuel gauge should read "FULL".
  3. If gauge responds properly, sending unit at tank is faulty and should be replaced. If gauge does not respond, check all wiring and connections, printed circuit-to-gauge terminal connections, or voltage limiter (if used). If all checks are okay, replace fuel gauge.
