Side Bearing Preload & Backlash Adjustment

  1. Install case and ring gear assembly with bearing cups, install bearing caps, align identification marks, and tighten cap bolts finger tight. Install dial indicator with contact point against back face of ring gear, then move differential and ring gear assembly tight against drive pinion and set indicator at zero.
  2. Move differential and ring gear assembly in opposite direction as much as possible and note reading. Subtract this reading from reading obtained in "Reassembly" above to determine the amount of shim thickness necessary to take up clearance between bearing cup and case at pinion side of differential.
  3. Remove differential and ring gear assembly, and remove differential bearing cones, then install correct shim pack between bearing cone and differential case hub shoulder with Tool C-4025 (9 3/4" axle), C-4028 (9 1/4" axle).
    NOTE: Add an additional.015" thickness of shims to the drive gear side of differential and install differential bearing cones (to provide correct bearing preload and backlash).
  4. Install spreader and spread carrier.015".
    CAUTION: DO NOT spread carrier more than.020".>

    Install bearing caps, remove spreader, coat bearing cap bolts with sealing compound, install and tighten bolts, then tap drive gear lightly to properly seat bearings and cups, and tighten cap bolts to specifications.

  5. Install dial indicator to carrier with contact point contacting ring gear tooth to measure backlash between ring gear and drive pinion. Backlash must not vary more than.002" between any four points checked. If backlash is not as listed in specification table, change shim pack thickness on BOTH differential bearing hubs (to keep proper bearing preload and backlash).
