Pinion Bearing Preload Adjustment

  1. Install universal joint flange, washer and nut (tighten to specifications), then rotate pinion several times to seat bearings. With inch-pound torque wrench, measure turning torque of pinion with nose of axle upright (should be 10-20 INCH lbs.).
  2. ADD shims to decrease preload; SUBTRACT shims to increase preload. Remove universal joint flange, nut and washer, then install oil slinger, gasket and oil seal (use Tool C-3719). Install universal joint flange washer and nut, then tighten to specifications.
