Differential Case: Removal

  1. Mark carrier and differential bearing caps for installation at same locations, then remove bearing caps, and install Spreader (Tool W-129) on rear axle housing with tool dowels seated in locating holes in housing, and turn tool screw finger tight in direction to spread housing.
  2. Screw pilot stud (Tool C-3288) in one side of carrier and install dial indicator so indicator arm is against opposite side of carrier on centerline of axle shafts, then spread carrier.012-.015".
    CAUTION: DO NOT spread more than.020".
  3. Remove dial indicator and differential assembly.
    NOTE: Release tension on spreader tool, but do not remove tool from rear axle housing until reassembled differential case is installed for side bearing preload adjustment.
