Differential Case: Reassembly

  1. Place ring gear on case pilot, and align threaded holes of gear with holes in case flange, then install ring gear bolts, and tap gear against case flange (use soft mallet). With unit installed in vise, alternately tighten capscrews to specifications.
  2. Place bearing cone on hub of case (without shims) with small end away from drive gear with Tool C-4025 (93 3/4" axle), C-4028(9 1/4" axle).
    CAUTION: DO NOT use pressure against bearing cage.

    Place bearing cups on cones, and insert case in carrier. Install bearing caps and tighten finger tight.

  3. Install dial indicator with pointer contacting back face of drive gear, then pry case assembly to one side of housing, and set indicator at zero. Pry case to opposite side and record reading.
    NOTE: The reading indicates amount of shims needed to take up clearance between bearing cups and case.
  4. Loosen bearing cap bolts and remove bearing caps. Remove differential assembly from housing.
