CHANGES, CAUTIONS, CORRECTIONS

IDENTIFICATION OF CHRYSLER CORP. DIFFERENTIALS  - Easy identification can be made at the differential cover. The 7 1/4" integral housing has an irregular 9 bolt pattern cover; 8 1/4" integral housing has an oval 10 bolt pattern cover; 9 1/4" & 9 3/4" integral housing has an irregular 10 bolt pattern cover; and an 8 1/4" & 8 3/4" separate housing type differential is also used.

• REAR AXLE HOUSING PRODUCTION 8, DRAIN PROCEDURE CHANGE:  Drain plug eliminated on later cars. Use suction gun and hose to remove lubricant.
• REAR SPRING "U" BOLT TORQUE SPECIFICATION CHANGE:  Torque specification reduced to 50 lbs., superseding all previous specifications, to reduce possibility of damage to axle shaft bearings.
• 1972 CHRYSLER CORP. 8 3/4" AXLES SPECIAL LUBRICATION NOTE:  All 8 3/4" rear axle shaft bearings are packed with a special lubricant (colored preen), to prevent brinelling of the new crowned roller bearings in shipment. If for any reason a crowned roller bearing must be repacked, the green type lubricant must be thoroughly washed out of the bearing as the two lubricants are not compatible.

Semi-floating, hypoid gear type with Hotchkiss drive. Differential case is "cage" type.
