Parking Brake Service Mode Selection

In order to perform repairs on certain parts of the brake system, it is necessary to fully retract the park brake caliper pistons. There are two ways to set the park brake into service mode. The preferred method is with a scan tool.

With Scan Tool 

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Ignition On/Vehicle in Service Mode with engine off.
  3. Select K160 Brake System Control Module.
  4. Select Control Functions.
  5. NOTE:

    Do NOT apply any brake pressure during this step.

  6. Select Activate Rear Park Brake Service Position.

Without Scan Tool 

  1. Ignition On/Vehicle in Service Mode with engine off.
  2. Release the electronic park brake.
  3. Apply the service brake pedal.
  4. Push and hold the electronic park brake switch.
  5. After 15 seconds, the yellow service park brake lamp will begin flashing.
  6. Release the service brake pedal.
  7. Release the electronic park brake switch.
  8. Within 5 seconds perform the following
    1. Push and release the electronic park brake switch.

Exiting Service Mode 

The park brake can be taken out of service mode with either of the following methods:

With Scan Tool 

With a scan tool, select Deactivate Rear Park Brake Service Position.

Without Scan Tool 

  1. Ignition On/Vehicle in Service Mode with engine off.
  2. Apply the service brake pedal.
  3. For Push/Pull electronic park brake switch proceed to step 4. For Push/Push electronic park brake switch proceed to step 5.
  4. Pull and hold the park brake switch until the red park brake lamp stops flashing.
  5. Push and hold the park brake switch until the red park brake lamp stops flashing.

Rear Parking Brake Actuator Release - Manual Release 

In the event the rear parking brake actuator fails or there is a loss of electrical power, the parking brake may be released manually.

  1. Remove the rear parking brake actuator. Parking Brake Actuator Replacement 
  2. Insert an appropriate hex tool past the splines of the parking brake actuator piston apply spindle in the brake caliper.
  3. Rotate the parking brake actuator piston apply spindle clockwise to release the parking brake.
  4. After the repair is complete, calibrate the park brake. Park Brake Calibration
