Circuit/System Verification

  1. Verify the condition does not exist: Incorrect fluid level or condition - Refer to: Loss of Coolant
    • If a condition exists 

      Repair or replace as necessary

    • Go to next step: If no condition exists 
  2. Ignition - On/Vehicle - In Service Mode
  3. Verify there are no DTCs set, except DTC P0128, P01F0, related to the following system/component: B34 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
    • Go to next step: If a related DTC is not set 
  4. Perform the following procedure/test: Thermostat Diagnosis

    Verify the procedure/test passes.

    • If the procedure/test does not pass 

      Replace the component that failed the test: Engine Coolant Thermostat

    • Go to next step: If the procedure/test passes 
  5. Verify the scan tool parameter: ECT Sensor = Colder than 54°C (130°F)
    • If 54°C (130°F) or warmer 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off - For greater than 30 min
    2. Ignition - On/Vehicle - In Service Mode
    3. Repeat the procedure starting at step 5
    • Go to next step: If colder than 54°C (130°F) 
  6. Engine - Running@1, 800 to 2, 200 RPM - For greater than 10 min

    Verify the scan tool parameter: ECT Sensor = Warmer than 80°C (176°F)

    • If 80°C (176°F) or colder 

      Refer to: Circuit/System Testing

    • Go to next step: If warmer than 80°C (176°F) 
  7. Verify the scan tool parameter: ECT Sensor = The parameter value should not change

    Perform the action while monitoring the parameter:

    • Wiggle the harness and connector(s) : B34 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
    • Wiggle the harness and connector(s) : K20 Engine Control Module
    • Wiggle the harness and connector(s) : X164 Inline Harness Connector
    • If the parameter value changes 

      Repair as necessary - Wiring/Terminal(s)/Electrical Connector(s)

    • Go to next step: If the parameter value does not change 
  8. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

    Verify the DTC does not set.

    • If the DTC sets 

      Repeat the procedure starting at step 1

    • Go to next step: If the DTC does not set 
  9. All OK.
