Alcohol in Fuel Testing - WithSpecial Tool
- Before proceeding with this test, review the tool user manual for Safety Information and Instructions: EN-44175-A Fuel Composition Tester

- Install - Digital Multimeter @ EN-44175-A Fuel Composition Tester
- Select: Volt-AC-Frequency@Digital Multimeter
- Add sample to special tool: Fuel@ EN-44175-A Fuel Composition Tester
- Press and release the switch: Power Button@ EN-44175-A Fuel Composition Tester
- Verify the tool reading:
- {WithoutE85} Digital Multimeter reading minus 50 = Less than 15% - Fuel Alcohol Content
- {WithE85} Digital Multimeter reading minus 50 = Less than 91% - Fuel Alcohol Content
- {WithoutE85} If 15% or greater
Fuel Tank - Drain & Fill - Refer to: Fuel Tank Draining
- {WithE85} If 91% or greater
- Ignition - On/Vehicle - In Service Mode
- Verify the scan tool parameter: Fuel Level Sensor = Greater than 50%
- If 50% or less - Fill the fuel tank.
- If greater than 50% - Fuel Tank - Drain & Fill - Refer to: Fuel Tank Draining
- Go to next step: If the specified value or less
- All OK.

Verify with the customer what type of fuel they are using.
Alcohol in Fuel Testing - WithoutSpecial Tool
- This procedure is for non-E85 gasoline only. If excessive alcohol content is suspected with E85 gasoline add 15% tank volume of fresh regular gasoline to the fuel tank.
- This procedure uses a 100 mL (3.04 US fl oz) specified cylinder with 1 mL (0.034 US fl oz) graduation marks.
- Add the following fluids to a 100 mL (3.38 US fl oz) graduated cylinder:
- Gasoline - 90 mL (3.04 US fl oz)
- Water - 10 mL (0.34 US fl oz)
- Install - Stopper @Graduated Cylinder
- Shake the cylinder vigorously for 10 - 15 s.
- Carefully loosen the stopper in order to release the pressure.
- Install - Stopper @Graduated Cylinder
- Shake the cylinder vigorously for 10 - 15 s.
- Place the container on a level surface for 5 min.
Verify the test results are as specified: Lower layer fuel volume is less than 25 mL (0.84 US fl oz)
- If 25 mL (0.84 US fl oz) or greater
Fuel Tank - Drain & Fill - Refer to: Fuel Tank Draining
- Go to next step: If less than 25 mL (0.84 US fl oz)
- If 25 mL (0.84 US fl oz) or greater
- All OK.

NOTE:
If alcohol is in the fuel, the volume of the lower layer, which would now contain both alcohol and water, will be more than 10 ml (0.34 oz). For example, if the volume of the lower layer is increased to 15 ml (0.51 oz), this indicates at least 5% alcohol in the fuel. The actual amount of alcohol may be somewhat more because this procedure does not extract all of the alcohol from the fuel.
