Torque Converter Replacement Guide

Do not replace the torque converter with the following conditions:

• TCC shudder/surge/fish bite - Refer to Torque Converter Clutch Shudder in this procedure.
• Transmission fluid is discolored or oil pan contains clutch/metal debris. Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check 
  NOTE:

  Debris found in oil pan transmission fluid will not cause damage to internal torque converter components nor any internal transmission components.

• Harsh gear shifts. Symptoms - Automatic Transmission 
• Vibration - out of balance. Refer to Torque Converter Vibration Test in this procedure.
• No drive/slips in drive. Complete all engine and transmission diagnostics.
• Idle surge/rough idle, refer to Symptoms - Engine Controls.
• TCC apply/release shudder. Refer to Torque Converter Clutch Shudder in this procedure.
• TCC chuggle with zero TCC slip speed, refer to Symptoms - Engine Controls.
• DTC P2808 Transmission Control Solenoid Valve 7 Stuck Off DTC P2808 or P2809 
• DTC P2809 Transmission Control Solenoid Valve 7 Stuck On DTC P2808 or P2809 
• Poor launch at acceleration/increased drag at deceleration - Refer to Torque Converter Stator in this procedure. Complete all engine and transmission diagnostics, refer to Symptoms - Engine Controls.

Replace the torque converter with following conditions:

• Contaminated with engine coolant
• External leaks in the hub or closure weld area
• Torque converter pilot damaged
• Torque converter hub surface damaged
• Broken flexplate
• Stripped converter bolt holes - inspect the flexplate and refer to Lower Engine Noise, Regardless of Engine Speed.
• Torque converter discolored/overheated
• Transmission pump damage
• Stator support damage
• Internal converter damage with no transmission damage found
