Removal Procedure
- Camshaft Cover-Left Side - Remove - Camshaft Cover Replacement - Left Side
- NOTE:
This will put the camshafts in a rested position and aid in removal
Rotate the engine clockwise using the crankshaft dampener retaining bolt until laser etched flats on both camshafts are facing up.
- CAUTION:
Refer to Torque Reaction Against Timing Drive Chain Caution .
NOTE:Do NOT remove or back out the camshaft position actuator bolt(s). Simply break them loose from their fully-torqued position. The position actuators must stay firmly attached until the retaining tools are in place, but they should be broken loose while the chain is still tight and in position.
Use an opened end wrench on the cast hexagonal portion of the camshafts to hold them in place while breaking the actuator fasteners loose to prevent camshaft rotation.
Loosen both intake and exhaust camshaft position actuator retaining bolts but DO NOT remove.
- Clean off any oil residue on camshaft position actuators.
- NOTE:
Marking the relationship of the timing chain to actuators is critical for timing alignment.
Mark the position of the chain to the camshaft position actuator - intake.
- Mark the position of the chain to the camshaft position actuator - exhaust.
- NOTE:
Do NOT remove or loosen any other camshaft bearing caps at this time, even if you intend to remove the camshaft.
Remove camshaft front cap bolts (1) [5x].
Remove the camshaft front cap (1).
Clean RTV from front cover and cylinder head surface at the indicated locations prior to timing retainer tool installation.
Loosen the wingnut (1) to open the clamping area of EN-51333-4 retainer.
- Install the EN-51333-4 retainer on the exhaust side front cover and cylinder head by screwing in the bolts (2) on the EN-51333-1 retainer finger-tight.
Loosen the wingnut (1) to open the clamping area of EN-51333-3 retainer.
- Install the EN-51333-3 retainer on the intake side front cover and cylinder head by screwing in the bolts (2) on the EN-51333-3 retainer finger-tight.
Using a wrench on the cast hexagonal portion of the intake camshaft, rotate the camshaft toward the exhaust camshaft and then release. Repeat this action three times to fully drain the tensioners of oil.
- Rotate the intake camshaft toward the exhaust camshaft and hold in order to create slack in the chain between the actuators.
- Tighten wingnut (1) so EN-51333-3 retainer closes and firmly grasps timing chain.
- Tighten the EN-51333-3 retainer bolts.
Using a wrench on the cast hexagonal portion of the exhaust camshaft, rotate the camshaft toward the intake camshaft and then release. Repeat this action three times to fully drain the tensioners of oil.
- Rotate the exhaust camshaft toward the intake camshaft and hold in order to create slack in the chain between the actuators.
- Tighten wingnut (1) so EN-51333-4 retainer closes and firmly grasps timing chain.
- Tighten the EN-51333-4 retainer bolts.
- NOTE:
The Exhaust camshaft position actuator must be removed first to provide enough chain slack to remove the intake Position Actuator.
Fully remove the camshaft actuator bolt (1) for the exhaust camshaft position actuator.
- CAUTION:
Do not pry against the face of the camshaft position actuators or the position actuator retaining bolts as the position actuators will be damaged.
Position a screwdriver or small pry bar between a camshaft cap and camshaft lobe. Carefully pry the camshafts to move as far as possible toward the rear/flywheel end of the engine.
Slide the camshaft position actuator (1) forward and off the end of the exhaust camshaft.
- NOTE:
- DO NOT remove the EN-51333 Timing Chain Retainer Set, they are holding the cam chain to maintain the proper timed position.
- To help remove the exhaust camshaft position actuator, loosen two bolts on the EN-51333 half a turn, and slide assembly forward to aid in removing the actuator.
Tilt the camshaft position actuator (1) forward and out/away to remove from the engine.
- Repeat steps 11-26 to remove the intake camshaft position actuator.
Do NOT overtighten the retainer bolts. The EN-51333-4 retainer should be able to slide via the retaining bolt slots. This fore/aft movement will allow easier removal and installation of the timing chain.
Do NOT overtighten the retainer bolts. The EN-51333-3 retainer should be able to slide via the retaining bolt slots. This fore/aft movement will allow easier removal and installation of the timing chain.
Do NOT tighten the wingnut with a tool of any kind. Firm finger-tightening is sufficient.
