Dual Mass Flywheel Cleaning and Inspection

Engine Flywheel
NOTE:
Complete the cleaning and inspection of flywheel only if the flywheel has passed the torque limiter inspection procedure. The flywheel may have one or both components of EN-51701
flywheel aligner and holder installed.
Procedure
NOTE:
Do not spray solvent directly on the flywheel.
- Clean the flywheel with cloth dampened with solvent.
- Dry the flywheel with dry cloth.
- Inspect the flywheel. The following conditions may be present and require no remedial action:
- Localized or many dark spots on friction surface
- Light yellow or gold discoloration of friction surface
- Friction surface discolored blue due to temporary thermal load with no discoloration in rivet area
- Slight trails of grease leaking from the opening or seal caps
- Inspect the flywheel for the following conditions. Replace the flywheel if any of these conditions are present:
- Damaged or heavily worn ring rear teeth
- Stress cracks around the flywheel-to-crankshaft bolt hole locations
- Scoring of friction surface
- Cracking on friction surface
- Pilot bearing grease leakage
- Tarnish in the rivet area and/or at the outer diameter
- Heavy grease leakage from the dual mass flywheel
- Loose or missing balance weights indicated by clearly visible weld spots
- Burnt residue of abraded clutch facing at the flywheel's outer edge or in ventilation holes
- Plane bearing clearance is greater than 0.17 mm (0.0067 in)
- Flywheel discolored blue or purple at the sides or on the back
- Flywheel is cracked or visibly damaged
- Secondary mass scores the primary mass

Input Shaft Bearing Procedure
NOTE:
Replace the bearing only if the original flywheel is to be installed and inspection of the bearing indicates replacement is necessary.
- Press out the input shaft bearing from engine side of the flywheel, using a shop press and a suitable arbor.
- Press in the input shaft bearing from the transmission side of the flywheel until it bottoms out in the flywheel housing, using a shop press and a suitable arbor.
