Oil is pulled from the oil pump suction pipe (1) to the oil pump (2). The oil pump flow control valve, controlled by the engine control module (ECM), mounted to the oil pump provides two stage functionality.

Then the oil is applied under pressure through the oil cooler (3) to the oil filter (4), where contaminants are removed. The engine oil pressure sensor and engine oil temperature sensor are located on the lower crankcase extension. These sensors provide the engine oil pressure and temperature data to the ECM.

From the oil filter the clean oil flows in different passages. One passage flows to the primary timing chain tensioner (5).

The other passage enters the oil gallery (6) where it is distributed to the crankshaft bearings, the connecting rod bearings and the piston oil nozzles. Oil also flows from the oil gallery to the turbocharger oil feed pipe (7), the secondary timing chain tensioner (8), and is distributed throughout the cylinder head (9).
