Installation Procedure

  1. Remove the M10-1.5 x 120mm (3) and the M10-1.5 x 45mm (2) bolts.

  2. Remove the EN-42386  Flywheel Holding Tool (1).
  3. Camshaft (1) - Install

  5. If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps:
    1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth.
    2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
    3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
    4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.
  6. Camshaft Retainer Bolt (2) - Install and hand tighten [4x]
  7. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

  8. Camshaft Retainer Bolt (2) - Tighten in sequence [4x] - Fastener Specifications
  9. Lubricate the valve lifters (1), valve lifter guides (2) and the engine block valve lifter bores with clean engine oil. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers , Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    NOTE:
    • When reusing valve lifters (1), ensure the lifters to their original locations.
    • Only replace the valve lifters (1) and valve lifter guides (2) as required.
    • If camshaft replacement is required, the valve lifters (1) must also be replaced.
  10. Install the raised surface of the valve lifter (1) into the notched area of the valve lifter guide (2).
  11. Install the valve lifter guide (2) and the valve lifters (3) as an assembly.

    NOTE:

    The notched area of the valve lifter guides (2) align with the locating tab on the engine block.

  12. Valve Lifter Guide Bolt- Left Side (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  13. Lubricate the valve lifters (1), valve lifter guides (2) and the engine block valve lifter bores with clean engine oil. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    NOTE:
    • When reusing valve lifters (1), install the lifters to their original locations.
    • Only replace the valve lifters (1) and the valve lifter guides (2) as required.
    • If camshaft replacement is required, the valve lifters (1) must also be replaced
  14. Install the raised surface of the valve lifter (1) into the notched area of the valve lifter guide (2).
  15. Install the valve lifter guide (2) and the valve lifters (1) as an assembly.

    NOTE:

    The notched area of the valve lifter guides (2) align with the locating tab on the engine block.

  16. Valve Lifter Guide Bolt- Right Side (3) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications

  21. Rotate the crankshaft sprocket until the sprocket alignment mark (1) is in the 12 o'clock position.

  22. Timing Chain Tensioner (1) - Install

  23. Timing Chain Tensioner Bolt (2) - Install and hand tighten
  24. Remove and DISCARD the tie strap from the actuator.
  25. The camshaft sprocket alignment mark (1) and the crankshaft sprocket alignment mark (2) must be aligned properly.

    NOTE:

    The alignment mark on the camshaft position actuator (2) and the alignment mark on the crankshaft sprocket (1) are off-center from the oil pump feed hole gasket on the timing chain tensioner. The alignment marks need to be lined up with one another, but NOT with the oil feed hole.

  26. If the alignment marks on the camshaft position actuator (1) and crankshaft sprocket (2) are difficult to see or line up, an alternate method can be used. Mark the gear tooth directly opposite of the alignment mark on the camshaft position actuator. Mark the gear tooth directly opposite of the alignment mark on the crankshaft sprocket.

  27. The timing chain has 30 links. Place links (1) and (30) on either side of the mark made on the camshaft position actuator and place links (15) and (16) on either side of the mark made on the crankshaft sprocket. This will ensure that the factory alignment marks are in the correct position and that the engine is properly timed.

  28. Identify the alignment hole (1) in the rear face of the camshaft position actuator and the locating pin (2) on the front face of the camshaft.

    NOTE:
    • Properly locate the camshaft position actuator (1) onto the locating pin of the camshaft (2).
    • The sprocket teeth and timing chain must mesh.
    • The camshaft and the crankshaft sprocket alignment marks MUST be aligned properly.
    • Do not use the camshaft position solenoid valve again. Install a NEW valve during assembly.
  29. Install the camshaft position actuator (3) and timing chain (1). Align the hole in the rear face of the camshaft position actuator with the locating pin on the front face of the camshaft. If necessary, rotate the camshaft or crankshaft sprockets (2) in order to align the timing marks. Use care to install the actuator (3) completely onto the front of the camshaft. Position fingers onto the face of the actuator sprocket and push the actuator onto the front of the camshaft. Never push on the reluctor wheel when attempting to install the actuator.

  30. NOTE:

    Never push on the reluctor wheel when attempting to install the actuator.

  31. Position fingers onto the face of the actuator sprocket (2) and push the actuator onto the front of the camshaft.
  32. Position the EN-42386  Flywheel Holding Tool (1) into place.

  33. Install the M10-1.5 x 120mm (3) and M10-1.5 x 45mm (2) bolts and tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
  34. Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve (1) - Install NEW and tighten - Fastener Specifications

  35. Locate a straight edge (1) across the front face of the engine block (2) and inspect for proper installation of the camshaft position actuator and timing chain (3). With the camshaft position actuator properly and completely installed onto the front of camshaft, the timing chain (3) will not protrude beyond the front face of engine block (2).

    NOTE:

    It is possible to push the camshaft rearward when installing the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve. Verify that the camshaft lobes are centered in the valve lifter bores after the camshaft position actuator is installed.

  36. Inspect the sprockets (1, 2) for proper alignment. The mark on the camshaft position actuator sprocket (1) should be located in the 6 o'clock position and the mark on the crankshaft sprocket (2) should be located in the 12 o'clock position.

  46. Engine Front Cover Bolt (1, 3) - Install and hand tighten [10x]
  47. Engine Front Cover Bolt (1, 3) - Tighten in sequence [10x] - Fastener Specifications
  48. If the engine front cover is reused perform the following steps:

    NOTE:

    If the engine front cover is reused, the crankshaft front oil seal must be replaced.

      NOTE:
      • For proper orientation, note the installation direction of the crankshaft front oil seal (3). The crankshaft front oil seal is a reverse-lip design. Install with "THIS SIDE OUT" displayed as shown.
      • Do NOT lubricate the crankshaft front oil seal sealing surface.
    1. Install the crankshaft front oil seal (3) with "THIS SIDE OUT" facing away from the engine.
    2. Install the NEW crankshaft front oil seal (3) to the EN-51091  Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (2).
    3. Install the EN-41478-A  Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (1) and the EN-51091  Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (2) into the crankshaft.
    4. Rotate the EN-51091  Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (2) clockwise until the NEW crankshaft front oil seal (3) enters the engine front cover and seats into the bottom of the engine front cover.
    5. Remove the EN-41478-A  Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (1) and the EN-51091  Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (2) from the crankshaft and engine front cover.
    6. Inspect the crankshaft front oil seal (3) for proper installation. The oil seal should be installed evenly and completely into the engine front cover.
  49. Apply a 3 mm (0.118 in) bead of RTV sealant on the oil pan (1). Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Alternately hand-tighten the fuel pump bolts one turn at a time until the pump is fully seated. Trying to draw down the pump without even side-to-side tightening may result in pump plunger damage.

  123. Install the fuel pump and fuel injector wiring harness and connect as necessary.

    • When using the valve train components again, always install the components to the original location and position.
    • Valve lash is net build. No valve adjustment is required.
    • Ensure the valve push rods (1) seat properly to the valve lifter sockets.
    • The rocker arm bolts are not serviced separately.
    • DO NOT tighten the rocker arm bolts at this time.

    • When using the valve train components again, always install the components to the original location and position.
    • Valve lash is net build. No valve adjustment is required.
    • Ensure the valve push rods (1) seat properly to the valve lifter sockets.
    • The rocker arm bolts are not serviced separately.
    • DO NOT tighten the rocker arm bolts at this time.
  154. Valve Push Rod- Right Side (1) - Install [8x]

    2. Carefully install the 2 formed ends (2) of the fuel feed intermediate pipe (1) into the sockets of the left and right fuel injection fuel rail. Take care not to hit the 2 formed ends (2) of the fuel feed intermediate pipe (1) on the threaded sockets on the fuel injection fuel rails.
    3. Hold the fuel feed intermediate pipe (1) firmly in place and hand tighten the 2 fuel feed intermediate pipe nuts (3).

  322. Install the 3 upper intake manifold sight shield grommets (2) to the 3 valve rocker arm cover insulator retainers (1).
  323. Exhaust Manifold Gasket- Right Side (2) - Install NEW

  324. Install the right side exhaust manifold (1) through the wheel opening.
  325. If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps:

    1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth.
    2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
    3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
    4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.
  326. Exhaust Manifold Bolt- Right Side (1) - Install NEW and hand tighten [5x]
  327. Exhaust Manifold Bolt- Right Side (1) - Tighten in sequence [5x] - Fastener Specifications
  328. Install the right exhaust manifold heat shield (1) through the wheel opening.

  333. Inspect the inside of the spark plug rubber boot for a thin, even coat of grease. If there is no grease present or additional grease is necessary, apply a thin coating of dielectric grease evenly to the inside of the spark plug rubber boot up to a depth of 15 mm (0.6 in) from the end of the boot Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers .

The graphite tends to burn away, but the glass beads remain, making the sensor easier to remove. New, or service replacement sensors already have the compound applied to the threads. If the sensor is removed from an exhaust component and if for any reason the sensor is to be reinstalled, the threads must have anti-seize compound applied before reinstallation.   358. Fill the engine oil to the proper level with NEW engine oil.

  361. Recharge the refrigerant. Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging
  362. Inspect for refrigerant leaks.
  363. Fill the cooling system. Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE 47716 L84, L87)
  364. Start the engine and check for coolant leaks.
  365. Check for oil leaks.
