| Worn or dirty valve lifters | Replace the valve lifters. |
| Stretched or broken timing belt and/or damaged sprocket teeth | Replace the timing belt and sprockets. |
| Worn, damaged, or faulty timing belt tensioners | Replace the tensioners. |
| Worn engine camshaft lobes |
