Crankcase Ventilation System Inspection/Diagnosis

Symptom Correction
Audible high pitch noise from front or rear crankshaft Inspect for restricted orifice on the oil separator cap
External oil leak Inspect for any of the following conditions:
  • Restricted or kinked PCV tube or hoses.
  • Damaged, incorrect, or incorrectly installed PCV tube or hoses.
  • Excessive crankcase pressure.
High idle speed Inspect for a leaking (damaged) PCV tube or hoses.
Oil Consumption Inspect for restricted orifice on the oil separator cap
Rough Idle Inspect for any of the following conditions:
  • Restricted or kinked PCV tube or hoses.
  • Leaking (damaged) PCV tube or hoses.
  • Vacuum hoses worn or not properly installed.
Sludge in the engine Inspect for restricted or kinked PCV tube or hoses.
Stalling or slow idle speed Inspect for any of the following conditions:
  • Restricted or kinked PCV tube or hoses.
  • Leaking (damaged) PCV tube or hoses.
