Circuit/System Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Headlamp Switch - Malfunction

    NOTE:

    It may take up to 2 min for all vehicle systems to power down before an accurate ground or low reference circuit continuity test can be performed.

  1. Ignition/Vehicle & All vehicle systems - Off
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector: @ S30 Headlamp Switch
  3. Test for less than 15 ohms between the test points:Ground circuit terminal 8 & Ground
    • If 15 ohms or greater 
    1. Test for less than 2 ohms between the test points:Ground circuit terminal 8 @ S30 Headlamp Switch & Ground terminal
      • If 2 ohms or greater - Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 ohms - Repair the open/high resistance in the ground connection.
    • Go to next step: If less than 15 ohms 
  4. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
  5. Verify the scan tool parameter:Park Lamps Switch = Inactive
    • If not the specified state 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off
    2. Disconnect the electrical connector:X1 @ K9 Body Control Module
    3. Test for infinite resistance between the test points:Signal circuit terminal 5 @ S30 Headlamp Switch & Ground
      • If less than infinite resistance - Repair the short to ground on the circuit.
      • If infinite resistance - Replace the component:K9 Body Control Module
    • Go to next step: If the specified state 
  6. Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the test points:Signal circuit terminal 5 @ S30 Headlamp Switch & Ground
  7. Verify the scan tool parameter:Park Lamps Switch = Active
    • If not the specified state 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off & Remove - Jumper wire(s)
    2. Disconnect the electrical connector:X1 @ K9 Body Control Module
    3. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
    4. Test for less than 1 V between the test points:Signal circuit terminal 5 @ S30 Headlamp Switch & Ground
      • If 1 V or greater - Repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
      • Go to next step: If less than 1 V
    5. Ignition/Vehicle - Off
    6. Test for less than 2 ohms between the test points:Signal circuit terminal 5 @ S30 Headlamp Switch & Signal circuit terminal 22 X1 @ K9 Body Control Module
      • If 2 ohms or greater - Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 ohms - Replace the component:K9 Body Control Module
    • Go to next step: If the specified state 
  8. Test or replace the component:S30 Headlamp Switch

Park Lamps - Malfunction

    NOTE:

    Perform the following test for the appropriate component.

    NOTE:

    It may take up to 2 min for all vehicle systems to power down before an accurate ground or low reference circuit continuity test can be performed.

  1. Ignition/Vehicle & All vehicle systems - Off
  2. Disconnect the appropriate component: & Test for less than 15 ohms between the test points:
    • E2LF Side Marker Lamp - Left Front - Terminal B & Ground
    • E2LR Side Marker Lamp - Left Rear - Terminal B & Ground
    • E2RF Side Marker Lamp - Right Front - Terminal B & Ground
    • E2RR Side Marker Lamp - Right Rear - Terminal B & Ground
    • E4AF Turn Signal Lamp - Left Front Outer - Terminal G & Ground
    • E4AH Turn Signal Lamp - Right Front Outer - Terminal G & Ground
    • E5AA Tail/Stop Lamp - Left - Terminal B & Ground { Without UGE }
    • E5AB Tail/Stop Lamp - Right - Terminal B & Ground { Without UGE }
    • E5E Tail Lamp - Left - Terminal B & Ground
    • E5F Tail Lamp - Right - Terminal B & Ground
    • If 15 ohms or greater 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off
    2. Test for less than 2 ohms between the test points:Ground circuit terminal & The other end of the circuit
      • If 2 ohms or greater - Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 ohms - Repair the open/high resistance in the ground connection.
    • Go to next step: If less than 15 ohms 
  3. Connect a test lamp between the test points:
    • E2LF Side Marker Lamp - Left FrontControl circuit terminal A & Ground
    • E2LR Side Marker Lamp - Left RearControl circuit terminal A & Ground
    • E2RF Side Marker Lamp - Right FrontControl circuit terminal A & Ground
    • E2RR Side Marker Lamp - Right RearControl circuit terminal A & Ground
    • E4AF Turn Signal Lamp - Left Front OuterControl circuit terminal B & Ground
    • E4AH Turn Signal Lamp - Right Front OuterControl circuit terminal B & Ground
    • E5AA Tail/Stop Lamp - Left Control circuit terminal A & Ground { Without UGE }
    • E5AB Tail/Stop Lamp - Right Control circuit terminal A & Ground { Without UGE }
    • E5E Tail Lamp - Left Control circuit terminal A & Ground
    • E5F Tail Lamp - Right Control circuit terminal A & Ground
  4. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
  5. Scan Tool Device Control - Park Lamps = On and Off
  6. Verify the test lamp turns On and Off.
    • If the test lamp is always Off 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off & Remove - Test lamp
    2. Disconnect the appropriate electrical connector:
      • X4 - Left - Park Lamps/Tail Lamps @ K9 Body Control Module
      • X5 - Right - Park Lamps/Tail Lamps @ K9 Body Control Module
      • X7 - Rear Compartment Lid - Tail Lamps @ K9 Body Control Module { Without UGE }
    1. Test for infinite resistance between the test points:Control circuit terminal @ K9 Body Control Module & Ground
      • If less than infinite resistance - Repair the short to ground on the circuit.
      • Go to next step: If infinite resistance
    2. Test for less than 2 ohms between the test points:Control circuit terminal @ K9 Body Control Module & The other end of the circuit
      • If 2 ohms or greater - Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 ohms - Replace the component:K9 Body Control Module
    • If the test lamp is always On 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off & Remove - Test lamp
    2. Disconnect the electrical connector:
      • X4 - Left - Park Lamps/Tail Lamps @ K9 Body Control Module
      • X5 - Right - Park Lamps/Tail Lamps @ K9 Body Control Module
      • X7 - Rear Compartment Lid - Tail Lamps @ K9 Body Control Module { Without UGE }
    3. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
    4. Test for less than 1 V between the test points:Control circuit terminal @ K9 Body Control Module & Ground
      • If 1 V or greater - Repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
      • If less than 1 V - Replace the component:K9 Body Control Module
    • Go to next step: If the test lamp turns On and Off 
  7. Test or replace the component:Park Lamps

Tail Lamps - Malfunction { With UGE }

    NOTE:

    Perform the following test for the appropriate component.

    NOTE:

    It may take up to 2 min for all vehicle systems to power down before an accurate ground or low reference circuit continuity test can be performed.

  1. Ignition/Vehicle & All vehicle systems - Off
  2. Disconnect the appropriate component: & Test for less than 15 ohms between the test points:
    • E2LR Side Marker Lamp - Left Rear - Terminal B & Ground
    • E2RR Side Marker Lamp - Right Rear - Terminal B & Ground
    • E42L Tail Lamp Assembly - Left - Terminal 1 & Ground
    • E42R Tail Lamp Assembly - Right - Terminal 1 & Ground
    • E58L Rear Compartment Lid Tail Lamp Assembly - Left - Terminal 1 & Ground
    • E58R Rear Compartment Lid Tail Lamp Assembly - Right - Terminal 1 & Ground
    • If 15 ohms or greater 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off
    2. Test for less than 2 ohms between the test points:Ground circuit terminal & The other end of the circuit
      • If 2 ohms or greater - Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 ohms - Repair the open/high resistance in the ground connection.
    • Go to next step: If less than 15 ohms 
  3. Connect a test lamp between the test points:
    • E2LR Side Marker Lamp - Left RearTerminal A & Ground
    • E2RR Side Marker Lamp - Right RearTerminal A & Ground
    • E42L Tail Lamp Assembly - LeftTerminal 3 & Ground
    • E42R Tail Lamp Assembly - RightTerminal 3 & Ground
    • E58L Rear Compartment Lid Tail Lamp Assembly - LeftTerminal 2 & Ground
    • E58R Rear Compartment Lid Tail Lamp Assembly - RightTerminal 2 & Ground
  4. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
  5. Scan Tool Device Control - Park Lamps = On and Off
  6. Verify the test lamp turns On and Off.
    • If the test lamp turns On and Off 

      Replace the appropriate component:

    • Go to next step: If the test lamp does not turn On and Off 
  7. Ignition/Vehicle - Off & Remove - Test lamp
  8. Connect the component @ Component harness
  9. Disconnect the electrical connector:X5 @ X50A Fuse Block - Underhood
  10. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
  11. Verify the component is not activated:Side Marker Lamps/Tail Lamps
    • If the component activates 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off
    2. Disconnect the appropriate component:
    3. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
    4. Test for less than 1 V between the test points:Control circuit terminal & Ground
      • If 1 V or greater - Repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
      • If less than 1 V - Replace the component:Side Marker Lamps/Tail Lamps
    • Go to next step: If the component does not activate 
  12. Ignition/Vehicle - Off
  13. Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the test points:Control circuit terminal K2 @ X50A Fuse Block - Underhood & B+
  14. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
  15. Verify the component activates:
    • If the component does not activate 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off & Remove - Jumper wire(s)
    2. Disconnect the appropriate component:
    1. Test for infinite resistance between the test points:Control circuit terminal K2 & Ground
      • If less than infinite resistance - Repair the short to ground on the circuit.
      • Go to next step: If infinite resistance
    2. Test for less than 2 ohms between the test points:Control circuit terminal & The other end of the circuit
      • If 2 ohms or greater - Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 ohmsAll OK.
    • Go to next step: If the component activates 
  16. Connect the component:X5 @ X50A Fuse Block - Underhood
  17. Disconnect the component:X5 @ K9 Body Control Module
  18. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
  19. Verify a test lamp turns On between the test points:Control circuit terminal 15 & Ground
    • If the test lamp does not turn On 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off & Remove - Test lamp
    2. Disconnect the electrical connector:X1 @ X50A Fuse Block - Underhood
    3. Test for infinite resistance between the test points:Control circuit terminal 15 @ K9 Body Control Module & Ground
      • If less than infinite resistance - Repair the short to ground on the circuit.
      • Go to next step: If infinite resistance
    4. Test for less than 2 ohms between the test points:Control circuit terminal 15 @ K9 Body Control Module & Control circuit terminal H6 X1 @ X50A Fuse Block - Underhood
      • If 2 ohms or greater - Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 ohms - Replace the component:X50A Fuse Block - Underhood
    • Go to next step: If the test lamp turns On 
  20. Ignition/Vehicle - Off
  21. Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the test points:Control circuit terminal 15 & Ground
  22. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
  23. Verify the component activates:Side Marker Lamps/Tail Lamps
    • If the component does not activate 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off
    2. Disconnect the electrical connector:X1 @ X50A Fuse Block - Underhood
    3. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
    4. Test for less than 1 V between the test points:Control circuit terminal 15 @ K9 Body Control Module & Ground
    • If 1 V or greater - Repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
    • If less than 1 V - Replace the component:X50A Fuse Block - Underhood
    • Go to next step: If the component activates 
  24. Test or replace the component:K9 Body Control Module

License Plate Lamps - Malfunction

    NOTE:

    Perform the following test for the appropriate component.

    NOTE:

    It may take up to 2 min for all vehicle systems to power down before an accurate ground or low reference circuit continuity test can be performed.

  1. Ignition/Vehicle & All vehicle systems - Off
  2. Disconnect the appropriate component:E7 License Plate Lamp
  3. Test for less than 15 ohms between the test points:Ground circuit terminal 2 & Ground
    • If 15 ohms or greater 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off
    2. Test for less than 2 ohms between the test points:Ground circuit terminal 2 & Ground terminal
      • If 2 ohms or greater - Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 ohms - Repair the open/high resistance in the ground connection.
    • Go to next step: If less than 15 ohms 
  4. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
  5. Connect a test lamp between the test points:Control circuit terminal 1 @ E7 License Plate Lamp & Ground
  6. Scan Tool Control Functions - License Plate Lamps - On and Off
  7. Verify the test lamp turns On and Off.
    • If the test lamp is always Off 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off
    2. Disconnect the electrical connector:X4 @ K9 Body Control Module
    3. Test for infinite resistance between the test points:Control circuit terminal 13 & Ground
      • If less than infinite resistanceRepair the short to ground on the circuit.
      • Go to next step: If infinite resistance
    4. Test for less than 2 ohms between the test points:Control circuit terminal 13 @ K9 Body Control Module & Control circuit terminal 1 @ E7 License Plate Lamp
      • If 2 ohms or greater - Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 ohms - Replace the component:K9 Body Control Module
    • Go to next step: If the test lamp is always On 
    1. Ignition/Vehicle - Off & Remove - Test lamp
    2. Disconnect the electrical connector:X4 @ K9 Body Control Module
    3. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
    4. Test for less than 1 V between the test points:Control circuit terminal & Ground
      • If 1 V or greater - Repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
      • If less than 1 V - Replace the component:K9 Body Control Module
    • Go to next step: If the test lamp turns On and Off 
  8. Test or replace the component:E7 License Plate Lamp
