Removal Procedure
- Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement - Remove
- Camshaft Cover Replacement - Remove
- Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement - Remove
- NOTE:
TDC position can be identified at the crankshaft balancer by the notch (1) on the crankshaft balancer and the marking (2) on the engine front cover. Refer to the appropriate illustration for reference.
Using the crankshaft balancer bolt, rotate the engine to cylinder 1 top dead center (TDC) of exhaust stroke.
Install the EN-51367 holder (1).
- NOTE:
Both actuator marks at the 12 O'clock position (1) with the balancer marks properly aligned confirm the engine is set at cylinder one TDC.
Confirm the camshaft position actuator marks are at the 12 O'clock position.
- Apply a mark to the timing chain in the 12 O'clock position (2).
- Remove the EN-51367 holder.
- Timing Chain Upper Guide Replacement - Remove
Engine Lift Bracket Bolt (2) - Remove [2x]
- Engine Lift Bracket - Remove
Pre-Install the EN-51397-2 retainer (2) to the intake side of the camshaft timing chain (3).
- Install the EN-51397-1 retainer (5) to the exhaust side of the camshaft timing chain.
- Hand tighten the bolts (1, 4).
- Tighten the bolt (6) to 5 N.m (44 lb in) only on the camshaft exhaust side.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
Remove the engine front cover hole plug (1) from the engine front cover (3).
- Remove the seal ring (2)
- Lower the vehicle.
- NOTE:
Steps 20 - 24 explain how to adjust and secure the timing chain tensioner in the service position and should be used for reference.
Slightly release tension from piston (2) until bar (1) can be unlocked by rotating lever (3) in direction of the arrow.
- NOTE:
Lever (2) cannot be locked in this position.
Entirely push back piston (1) into the tensioner.
Release tension from piston (1) until it releases for three ratchets. Three ratchets can be identified by listening to the click noises.
Apply tension to the piston until the lever (1) is rotated back into the locking position where the bore in the lever aligns with the bore in the tensioner housing.
- Secure lever in this position with suitable pin (2).
- CAUTION:
The tightening force must be applied gently to the wrench. Using too much force will lead to an overlap of the timing chain that will cause severe engine damages.
NOTE:Follow Steps 20-24 during rotation of the intake camshaft.
Using a wrench (1), apply tension to the chain tensioner by slightly applying force in clockwise direction.
- NOTE:
The timing chain tensioner is in service position (1).
Secure the timing chain tensioner in the service position with a suitable 3 mm (0.118 in) size pin.
Fix the EN-51397-2 retainer (1) to the intake side of the camshaft timing chain.
- Tighten the bolt (2) of the EN-51397-2 retainer (1) to 5 N.m (44 lb in).
- NOTE:
The timing chain can be moved up and down between both camshaft position actuators.
Check chain slack, if not enough slack is gained, refer to detailed chain tensioner description from step 20 to 26. Apply and release tension to the chain tensioner via the intake camshaft.
- NOTE:
The timing chain tensioner must be properly secured in the service position to relieve timing chain tension as described above. Removing the camshaft actuator in another position of the tensioner will make the reinstallation impossible and removal of the engine front cover will be required.
Remove and DISCARD the intake camshaft position actuator bolt (1).
- Remove the intake camshaft position actuator (2).
Remove and DISCARD the exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt (1).
- Remove the exhaust camshaft position actuator (2)
Refer to Fastener Caution .
The camshaft timing chain will be held by the EN-51397-1 retainer.
The camshaft timing chain will be held by EN-51397-1 retainer.
