Removal Procedure

    Disconnect the negative battery cable (1). Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Single Battery) , or Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Dual Battery) .

  2. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Front and Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (With M5U) , or Front and Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (With MYD) , or Front and Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (Chassis Cab with MYD) , or Front and Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement (Chassis Cab with M5U)
  3. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  4. Remove the transmission mount. Transmission Mount Replacement
  5. Remove the warm up three-way catalytic converter. Warm Up Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement (LV1)

    Remove the torque converter access plug (1).

  7. Remove the starter motor. Starter Replacement (LWN) , or Starter Replacement (L96, LC8) , or Starter Replacement (LV1)

    Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts (1).

  9. Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.

    Remove the range selector cable retaining clip (1) from the transmission range selector cable.

  11. Remove the range selector cable (2) from the range selector lever ball stud (3).
  12. Position the range selector lever cable (4) out of the way.
  13. Disconnect the transmission electrical connector from the transmission.
  14. Remove the wire harness and all necessary wiring harness retainers from the transmission.

    Disconnect the clip (1) that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.

  16. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler inlet and outlet pipe from the transmission. Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (M5U)

    Remove the nuts (1, 4) then reposition the brackets (2, 3) out of the way.

    Remove the transmission bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) securing the transmission to the engine.

    Remove the transmission bolt (1).

    Remove the transmission bolts (1).

  21. Remove the transmission fluid cooler pipe bracket (2).
  22. Pull the transmission straight back.
  23. Install the J-21366  converter holding strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  24. Flush and flow test the transmission oil cooler and lines. Transmission Fluid Cooler Flow Test and Flushing
