Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 GMC Savana 3500, 2019 GMC Savana 2500, 2019 Chevrolet Express 3500, and 2019 Chevrolet Express 2500. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the J-21366  converter holding strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  2. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  3. Remove the J-21366  converter holding strap from the transmission.
  4. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.

    The torque converter must rotate freely by hand.

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    Install the bolts (2, 3, 4) securing the transmission to the engine and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

  6. Install the bolt (1) securing the transmission to the engine and tighten to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).

    Install the right side transmission bolt (1) and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

    Install the bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) securing the transmission to the engine and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

    Install the brackets (2, 4) then tighten the nuts (1, 3) to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).

    Connect the transmission vent hose (2).

  11. Install the wire harness to the transmission.
  12. Connect the transmission electrical connector to the transmission.

    Connect the clip (1) that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.

  14. Connect the clip that secures the fuel line bracket to the rear of the transmission.

    Install the range selector cable (4) to the range selector cable bracket and to the range selector lever ball stud lever (3).

  16. Install the range selector cable retaining clip (1) to the transmission range selector cable.

    If reusing the torque converter bolts (1), clean the bolt threads and apply sealant to the threads prior to installation.

  18. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts (1) and tighten to 65 N.m (48 lb ft).
  19. Install the starter motor. Starter Replacement (LWN) , or Starter Replacement (L96, LC8) , or Starter Replacement (LV1)

    Install the torque converter access plug (1).

    Install the crankshaft position sensor cover (1). Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement

  22. Install the catalytic converter pipe. Catalytic Converter Replacement (LWN) , or Catalytic Converter Replacement (L96, LC8)
  23. Install the transmission mount. Transmission Mount Replacement
  24. Remove the transmission jack.
  25. Install the rear propeller shaft. Propeller Shaft Replacement (With M5U) .

    Connect the transmission oil cooler hose/pipe (2) from the transmission. Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement (M5U) .

  27. Lower the vehicle.
  28. Check the transmission fluid level and fill if necessary. Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check
  29. If a NEW TCM has been installed into the vehicle, the NEW module needs to be reprogrammed. Service Programming System (SPS)
  30. NOTE:

    The Service Fast Learn Adapts procedure must be performed when one of the following repairs have been made to the vehicle. Failure to perform the procedure after one of the following repairs may result in poor transmission performance, as well as transmission DTCs being set:

    • Transmission internal service/overhaul
    • Valve body repair or replacement
    • Control solenoid valve assembly replacement
    • TCM software/calibration update
    • Any service in response to a shift quality concern
  31. Perform the Reset Transmission Adapts. Reset Transmission Adapts
  32. Program the transmission. Solenoid Valve Characterization Reprogramming
