Installation Procedure

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    Install the J 36857-1  Engine Lift Bracket to the cylinder heads.

    Tighten 

    • Tighten the M8 engine lift bracket bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
    • Tighten the M10 engine lift bracket bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
  2. Install an engine hoist to the J 36857-1  Engine Lift Bracket.
  3. Remove the engine from the engine stand.
  4. Remove the J 21366  holding strap from the transmission.
  5. With the aid of an assistant, carefully lower the engine into the vehicle while checking for component interference.
  6. Align the engine and transmission.

    Install the bolts (3, 4) securing the transmission to the engine. Transmission Replacement

    Engine Mount Bolt- Left Side (1) @ Frame - Install - Engine Mount Replacement - Left Side

  12. Remove the floor jack from under the transmission.
  13. Remove the engine hoist.
  14. Remove the J 36857-1  Engine Lift Bracket from the engine.

    Exhaust Manifold- Right Side (1) - Install - Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (L96, LC8)

  17. Raise the vehicle.

    Install the bolts (1, 2, 5, 6) securing the transmission to the engine. Transmission Replacement

    Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts (1). Transmission Replacement

    Transmission Fluid Filler Tube (1) - Install - Transmission Fluid Filler Tube and Seal Replacement

    Exhaust Front Pipe Nut (1) @ Right Side - Install [3x] - Catalytic Converter Replacement (L96, LC8)

  23. Connect the following electrical connectors:
    • Crankshaft position sensor
    • Engine oil level sensor
    • Coolant heater, if equipped

  30. Heater Inlet Hose Clamp (1) @ Water Pump - Engage - Hose Clamp Replacement Guidelines - Spring Type

    Heater Outlet Hose (2) - Install - Heater Outlet Hose Replacement (L96, LC8 Heater Water Flow Control Valve to Heater Core Outlet Tube) , or Heater Outlet Hose Replacement (L96, LC8 Water Pump Housing to Heater Water Flow Control Valve) , or Heater Outlet Hose Replacement (L96 Auxiliary Heater Inlet and Outlet Pipe to Heater Core Outlet Tube)

  32. Heater Outlet Hose Clamp (1) @ Water Pump - Engage - Hose Clamp Replacement Guidelines - Spring Type

    Air Conditioning Compressor (2) - Install - Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement (L96, LC8)

  34. Install the ground strap and negative battery cable to the engine. Ground Repair

  62. Fill the cooling system with coolant. Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static LC8, LV1, L96) , or Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE47716 LC8, LV1, L96)
  63. NOTE:

    Prelube is necessary if the engine is replaced or overhauled.

  64. If the engine is replaced with a new engine or has been overhauled, perform the Engine Prelubing procedure. Engine Prelubing 
  65. Perform the CKP system variation learn procedure. Crankshaft Position Variation Learn
  66. If the engine has been overhauled, use the following procedure to test the engine after it is installed in the vehicle.
    1. Disable the ignition system.
    2. Crank the engine several times. Listen for any unusual noises or evidence that parts are binding.
    3. Enable the ignition system.
    4. Start the engine and listen for unusual noises.
    5. Check the vehicle oil pressure gauge or light and confirm that the engine has acceptable oil pressure.
    6. Run the engine speed at about 1, 000 RPM until the engine has reached normal operating temperature.
    7. Listen for sticking lifter and other unusual noises.
    8. Inspect for fuel, oil and/or coolant leaks while the engine is running.
    9. Perform a final inspection for the proper engine oil and coolant levels.
