Idler Arm Inspection

Special Tools
- J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin
- J-7872 Magnetic Base Dial Indicator

- Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
Position the wheels in a straight-ahead position and install the J 42640 steering column anti-rotation pin.(1).
Install the base of the J-7872 Magnetic Base Dial Indicator(1), or equivalent, to the vehicle frame at the location shown above.
- Install the dial indicator J-7872 Magnetic Base Dial Indicator(2), or equivalent, to the idler arm with the contact point at the location shown above.
- Ensure the dial indicator is set at zero before taking a measurement.
- Using a pry bar, induce an upward and downward motion on the idler arm.
- If movement exceeds 2 mm (0.078 in) replace the idler arm. Steering Linkage Idler Arm Replacement
- Remove the dial indicator J-7872 Magnetic Base Dial Indicator, or equivalent, from the vehicle frame and the idler arm.
- Lower the vehicle.
Remove the J 42640 steering column anti-rotation pin (1).
