Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2019 GMC Savana 3500, 2019 GMC Savana 2500, 2019 Chevrolet Express 3500, and 2019 Chevrolet Express 2500. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the J-21366  converter holding strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  2. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  3. Raise the transmission into place while simultaneously installing the fluid indicator tube.
  4. Remove the J-21366  converter holding strap from the transmission.
  5. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.

    The torque converter must rotate freely by hand.

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    Install the bolts (1, 2) securing the transmission to the engine and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

  7. Connect the transmission vent hose.
  8. Install the wire harness to the transmission.
  9. Connect the transmission electrical connectors and wiring harness retainers to the transmission.
  10. Install the transmission heat shield. Transmission Heat Shield Replacement

    Install the range selector cable retaining clip (1) to the transmission range selector cable.

    Install the range selector cable (2) and the range selector lever to the transmission. Automatic Transmission Range Selector Lever Replacement

    If reusing the torque converter bolts, clean the bolt threads and apply threadlocker to the threads prior to installation. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

  14. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts and tighten to 65 N.m (48 lb ft).

    Install the right flywheel inspection cover. Transmission Converter Cover Replacement (Right Side)

    Install the left flywheel inspection cover. Transmission Converter Cover Replacement (Left Side)

    Install the torque converter access plug (1).

  18. Install the catalytic converter pipe. Catalytic Converter Replacement (LWN) , or Catalytic Converter Replacement (L96, LC8)
  19. Install the transmission mount. Transmission Mount Replacement 
  20. Remove the transmission jack.
  21. Install the rear propeller shaft. Propeller Shaft Replacement (With MYD) .
  22. Connect the oil cooler lines to the transmission. Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement (MYD)
  23. Lower the vehicle.

    Install the bolts (1, 2 3, 4, 5, 6) securing the transmission to the engine and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

    Install the bolt (2) and nut (1) that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission and tighten to 7 N.m (62 lb in).

  26. Install the nut (1) that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft)
  27. Install the engine cover. Engine Cover Replacement
  28. Connect the negative battery cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Single Battery) , or Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Dual Battery) .
  29. Check the transmission fluid level and fill if necessary. Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check
  30. If a NEW TCM has been installed into the vehicle, the NEW module needs to be reprogrammed. Service Programming System (SPS)
  31. Perform the Reset Transmission Adapts. Refer to Reset Transmission Adapts .
