Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
  2. Remove the rear tires and wheels. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Without Dual Rear Wheels) , or Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (With Dual Rear Wheels)
  3. GM1965295

    Remove the vent hose from the rear drive axle.

  4. Remove the rear brake calipers, and relocate to the side. Rear Brake Caliper Replacement (JH6) , or Rear Brake Caliper Replacement (JH9)
  5. Drain the rear axle. Differential Oil Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle) , or Differential Oil Replacement (9.5 Inch Axle) 
  6. Remove the propeller shaft. Propeller Shaft Replacement (With M5U) , or Propeller Shaft Replacement (With MYD)
  7. GM4567868

    Remove the rear brake pipe retaining bracket bolts (1 and 2).

  8. Secure the rear brake pipes to the frame with mechanics wire or equivalent.
  9. Disconnect the rear park brake cables from the axle. Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement - Left Side , Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement - Right Side
    10. NOTE:

    Ensure that the rear drive axle is properly secured to the jack stand.

  10. Support the rear drive axle with a hydraulic jack stand.
  11. Remove the rear spring U-Bolts, the rear spring anchor plates, and the rear spring spacers from the vehicle. Rear Leaf Spring Replacement (Chassis Cab) , or Rear Leaf Spring Replacement (Except Chassis Cab)
  12. With the aid of an assistant, lower the drive axle.

    Lower the rear drive axle assembly (1).
