Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
  2. Remove the differential assembly. Differential Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle) , or Differential Replacement (9.5 Inch Axle) 
  3. Remove the pinion flange/yoke and the oil seal. Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (9.5 Inch Axle) , or Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle) 
    4. NOTE:

    DO NOT let the drive pinion fall out of the rear axle housing.

  4. Using the a brass drift and a hammer, remove the drive pinion from the housing.
  5. GM9731

    Remove and discard the collapsible spacer from the pinion.

  6. Remove the pinion bearings and the cups. Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle) , or Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (9.5 Inch Axle) 
  7. GM866503
    NOTE:

    The ring gear bolts have left-hand threads.

    Remove and discard the ring gear bolts. Use NEW ring gear bolts ONLY.

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Ring Gear Removal Caution .

    Using a brass drift, remove the ring gear from the differential.
