Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
- Remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Without Dual Rear Wheels) , or Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (With Dual Rear Wheels)
- Remove the rear brake calipers. Rear Brake Caliper Replacement (JH6) , or Rear Brake Caliper Replacement (JH9)
- Remove the rear propeller shaft. Propeller Shaft Replacement (With M5U) , or Propeller Shaft Replacement (With MYD)
Using an inch pound torque wrench, measure the amount of torque required to rotate the pinion. Record this measurement for reassembly. This will give the combined preload for the following components:
- The pinion bearings
- The pinion oil seal
- The differential case bearings
- The axle bearings
- The axle seals
Scribe an alignment line between the pinion shaft and the pinion yoke.
Using the J-8614 - 01 holding tool, remove and discard the pinion nut.
- Remove the washer.
- NOTE:
Use a clean container in order to retrieve the lubricant.
Using the J-8614 - 01 holding tool (1) and J-8614 - 02 Flange and Pulley Tool (2 and 3), remove the pinion yoke.
- Using a suitable tool, remove and discard the pinion oil seal.
Do not re-use the old pinion nut. Stake the NEW pinion nut after the final rotating torque is achieved. If the pinion nut is not staked after the final rotating torque is achieved, the nut may lose retention causing loss of vehicle propulsion.
Observe and mark the positions of all the driveline components, relative to the propeller shaft and the axles, prior to disassembly. These components include the propeller shafts, drive axles, pinion flanges, output shafts, etc. Reassemble all the components in the exact places in which you removed the parts. Follow any specifications, torque values, and any measurements made prior to disassembly.
