Assemble Procedure

  1. GM889101

    Using the J-8092  handle (2) and the J-46725  Bearing Installer (1), install the outer pinion bearing cup.

  2. GM651743

    Using the J-8092  handle (2) and the DT-49032  installer (1), install the inner pinion bearing cup.

  3. Determine the selective shim thickness for the drive pinion. Pinion Depth Adjustment (10.5 Inch Axle) , or Pinion Depth Adjustment (9.5 Inch Axle)

    Install the shim (1) on the differential drive pinion gear (2).

  5. GM651742

    Using the J-22828  installer or the J-36614  installer and a hammer, install the inner pinion bearing until the pinion bearing seats on the drive pinion shim.

    Install a new collapsible spacer.

  7. Lubricate the pinion bearings with the axle lubricant. Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations
  8. Install the pinion drive gear into the axle housing.

    Install the outer pinion bearing (2) into the differential drive pinion gear (1).

  10. Install the drive pinion flange/yoke and or oil seal. Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (9.5 Inch Axle) , or Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle) 
  11. GM661077

    Using an inch-pound torque wrench, measure the rotating torque of the drive pinion should be between 1.0 - 2.3 N.m (10 - 20 lb in) for used bearings and 1.7 - 3.4 N.m (15 - 30 lb in) for new bearings.

  12. If the rotating torque measurement is below 1.0 N.m (10 lb in) for used bearings, or 1.7 N.m (15 lb in) for new bearings, continue to tighten the pinion nut in small increments, as needed, until the desired rotating torque specifications are reached as indicated in steps 10 and 11.
  13. Once the specified torque is obtained, rotate the pinion several times to ensure the bearings have seated.
  14. Recheck the rotating torque and adjust if necessary.

    Use a hammer and punch to stake two sides of the drive pinion nut lip to the corresponding grooves (1) in the drive pinion gear.

  16. Install the differential assembly. Differential Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle) , or Differential Replacement (9.5 Inch Axle) 
  17. Fill the axle with lubricant. Use the proper fluid. Differential Oil Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle) , or Differential Oil Replacement (9.5 Inch Axle) 
  18. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
