Parking Brake Shoe Clearance Adjustment

- Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Without Dual Rear Wheels) , or Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (With Dual Rear Wheels)
- Without disconnecting the hydraulic brake hoses, remove the brake calipers and brackets as an assembly and support with heavy mechanics wire or equivalent. Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (JH9) , or Rear Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement (JH6)
- Remove the rear brake rotors. Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JH6) , or Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JH9)
Set the J-21177-A Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge so that it lightly contacts the parking brake shoe friction surface of the brake rotor (1) at its widest point.
Position the J-21177-A Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge over the parking brake shoes (1) at the widest point.
- Rotate the parking brake shoe adjuster until the parking brake shoes just contact the J-21177-A Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge.
- Using a feeler gauge, set the parking brake shoe clearance to 0.66 mm (0.026 in).
- Repeat steps 3-6 for the opposite side.
- Install the rear brake rotors. Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JH6) , or Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (JH9)
- With all tension relieved from the parking brake cables, rotate the rear brake rotors. Observe the amount of effort required for rotation, and the amount of drag, if present.
- If drag is present, repeat steps 3-6.
