Camshaft Installation

    Install the exhaust camshaft (1).

    Install the intake camshaft (2) so that the timing marks on the camshaft sprockets are aligned (1). The final, relaxed alignment (3) for the camshaft sprockets will result during normal installation of the components.

    NOTE:
    • Ensure that all sealing material has been removed from the components, and the sealing surfaces are clean and free of contamination prior to applying the sealer.
    • Install and align the front cap within 20 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • Ensure the sealant does not drip into the intake or exhaust camshaft cap seats.

    Apply a bead of sealant to the camshaft bearing front cap sealing surface. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers  for the recommended sealant. Use a sponge to spread very carefully to the indicated areas.

    NOTE:

    It is critical during installation to ensure the bearing front cap and cylinder head alignment is correct and the mating surfaces are flush.

    Inspect the intake and exhaust camshaft cap seats, and confirm that the seats are free of sealant.

  5. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

  6. Install the camshaft bearing front cap (2). Tighten the cap bolts (1) to 11 N. m (97 lb in).

    Match each camshaft cap to the correct location on the cylinder head. In the illustration, the camshaft cap is the first cylinder, indicated by the "1", on the intake side of the cylinder head, indicated by the "I". A camshaft cap on the exhaust side is indicated by an "E".

    Install the camshaft caps (2).

    Tighten the cap bolts in sequence to 11 N. m (97 lb in).

    Install the camshaft position (CMP) sensor (1), washer (3), and bolt (2). Tighten the bolt to 11 N. m (97 lb in).

    Install the intake camshaft oil seal (1).
