Engine Description
Cylinder Block
The cylinder block is grey cast iron with 4 cylinders arranged in-line. It is a deep skirt block with 2 bolt main bearing caps. There are 5 crankshaft bearings with the thrust bearing located at the third main bearing cap.
Crankshaft
The crankshaft is made from forged alloy steel. The rod and main journals are induction hardened for increased durability. A balance shaft drive gear is located at the rear of the crankshaft. The crankshaft position sensor exciter ring is sandwiched between the crankshaft and the flexplate/flywheel.
Connecting Rod and Piston
The connecting rods are forged steel and are fractured split. The piston pins are full floating. The pistons are made from aluminum alloy and have a graphite coated skirt.
Oil Pan
The oil pan is die cast aluminum. The oil pan includes an attachment to the transmission to provide additional structural support.
Balance Shaft Assembly (2. 8L)
The balance shaft assembly is bolted to the bottom of the cylinder block. It is driven from a gear at the rear of the crankshaft. The balance shaft must be timed correctly to the crankshaft.
Cylinder Head
The cylinder head is made from aluminum alloy. Sintered powdered metal valve seats and valve guides are pressed into the cylinder head.
Valvetrain
The valvetrain is a belt driven overhead cam design. A belt drives the sprocket on the intake camshaft. The intake camshaft drives the exhaust camshaft through gears pressed onto each camshaft.
Valves
There are 2 intake and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder. Rotators are used on all of the intake valves. The rotators are located at the bottom of the valve spring to reduce valve train reciprocating mass. Positive valve stem seals are used on all valves.
Valve Lifters
The valve train uses a roller finger follower acted on by a hydraulic lash adjuster. The roller finger follower reduces friction and noise.
