Removal Procedure

    Engine Cover (1) - Remove - Engine Cover Replacement

  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Single Battery) , or Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Dual Battery)
  3. Recover the HVAC refrigerant. Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging
  4. Drain the cooling system. Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static LC8, LV1, L96) , or Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE47716 LC8, LV1, L96)
  5. Drain the engine oil. Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement

    Junction Block Cover (2) - Remove

  25. Battery Positive Cable Nut (1) - Remove

    Disconnect the release cable (1) from the hood primary latch.

  28. Disconnect electrical connection and harness retainers at radiator support.

    Radiator Lower Support Bolt (1) - Remove [8x]

  30. With the aid of an assistant, remove the core support assembly (2) with the radiator, condenser, radiator hoses and fan shroud intact.

    Fan Blade (1) - Remove - Fan Blade Replacement (LV1)

  41. Raise the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle

    Starter (1) - Remove - Starter Replacement (LV1)

    Exhaust Front Pipe Nut (1) @ Left Side - Remove [3x]

    Exhaust Front Pipe Nut (1) @ Right Side - Remove [3x]

  45. Disconnect the warm up three-way catalytic converter from the exhaust manifolds.
  46. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
    • The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
    • The engine oil level sensor
    • The coolant heater, if equipped
  47. Gather all the engine wiring harness and reposition off to the side.

    Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts (1).

    Disconnect the transmission vent hose retainer (1) from the engine.

    Remove the nuts (1, 4) and position the brackets (2, 3) aside

    Remove the bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) securing the transmission to the engine.

    Remove the right side transmission bolt (1).

    Remove the lower transmission bolts (1).

  54. Lower the vehicle.

    Exhaust Manifold- Right Side (1) - Remove - Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (LV1)

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    Install the J 36857-1  Engine Lift Bracket to the cylinder heads.

    Tighten 

    • Tighten the M8 engine lift bracket bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
    • Tighten the M10 engine lift bracket bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

    Engine Mount Bolt- Left Side (1) @ Frame - Remove [3x]

    Engine Mount Bolt- Right Side (1) @ Frame - Remove [3x]

  60. Remove the lower intermediate steering shaft. Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement
  61. Install a floor jack under the transmission for support.
  62. Disconnect electrical connectors as necessary.
  63. Install an engine hoist to the J 36857-1  lift bracket.
  64. Install the J 21366  holding strap to the transmission in order to hold the torque converter.
  65. Separate the engine from the automatic transmission.
  66. With the aid of an assistant, carefully raise the engine out of the vehicle while checking for component interference.
  67. Install the engine to an engine stand.
  68. Remove the engine hoist.
  69. Remove the J 36857-1  Engine Lift Bracket from the engine.
