Camshaft Bearing Removal: Notes

Special Tools 

J 33049  Camshaft Bearing Service Set

For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .

    IMPORTANT:

    A loose camshaft bearing may be caused by an enlarged, out of round, or damaged engine block bearing bore.

    Prior to bearing removal, inspect the camshaft bearings for loose fit in the engine block bearing bores. Refer to Camshaft and Bearings Cleaning and Inspection .

  2. Repair or replace the components, as required.

    Select the expanding driver (4 - 8) and washer (2 or 3) from the J 33049  service set.

  4. Assemble the tool.
  5. Insert the tool through the front of the engine block and into the bearing.
  6. Tighten the expander assembly (15) nut until snug.
  7. Push the guide cone (1) into the front camshaft bearing in order to align the tool.

    Drive the bearing from the block bore.

  9. IMPORTANT:

    In order to remove the inner camshaft bearings, operate the tool from either end of the block, using the driver bar extension and the guide cone in the front or rear camshaft bearing bore.

  10. Repeat the above procedures in order to remove the remaining bearings.
