Filling Procedure

    CAUTION:

    The procedure below must be followed. Improper coolant level could result in a low or high coolant level condition, causing engine damage.

    NOTE:

    If a complete engine block was drained, the recommended fill is by (Vac-N-Fill).

  1. { If equipped }Engine Coolant Heater - Install - Coolant Heater Replacement (LWN) , or Coolant Heater Replacement (LV1, L96, LC8) 
  2. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

  3. If the left and right engine block coolant drain plugs were removed, perform the following:
    1. Apply pipe sealer to the drain plugs.
    2. Install the drain plugs and tighten to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
  4. Radiator Outlet Hose @ Radiator - Install - Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (LWN) , or Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (LV1) , or Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (L96, LC8) 
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Remove the drain pan.
  7. NOTE:

    Use a 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL® antifreeze and clean, drinkable water.

  8. Slowly fill the cooling system through the radiator fill neck with a 50/50 coolant mixture. Approximate Fluid Capacities 
  9. Radiator Filler Cap - Install
  10. Fill the coolant recovery reservoir to the proper level.
  11. Start the engine.
  12. Run the engine at 2, 000 - 2, 500 RPM until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
  13. Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes.
  14. Shut the engine OFF.
  15. Allow the engine to cool.
  16. Top off the coolant as necessary.
  17. Inspect the concentration of the engine coolant using J 26568  coolant and battery fluid tester.
  18. Rinse away any excess coolant from the engine and the engine compartment.
  19. Check the cooling system for leaks.
