Preliminary Procedure
NOTE:
The flywheel must be installed on the engine in order to complete the mounted inspection procedure. The primary mass component of the flywheel should be locked using EN-51760
holding tool to prevent engine rotation.
- If necessary, install EN-51760
holding tool and starter motor bolts at the starter motor location, engaging the flywheel.
- If necessary, install EN-51701-1
aligner to the front secondary mass component of the flywheel.

Engine Flywheel Procedure - Dual Mass Flywheel Internal Torque Limiter Inspection
NOTE:
Inspect and confirm proper operation of the internal arc springs using EN-51701
aligner, a breaker bar, and EN-45049
angle meter to rotate the secondary mass of the flywheel in both the clockwise and counter-clockwise direction.
- In the neutral region (a), without spring load, the secondary mass should experience approximately 8 - 12 degrees of total rotational lash in either direction before the opposing inner springs of the dual mass flywheel engage.
- Achieve compression of the inner and outer springs by rotating the secondary mass between 25 - 30 degrees (b) in either direction. Rotate the secondary mass in both directions while inspecting for the following conditions:
- Scraping or grinding noises
- Unacceptable increase in neutral spring zone, resulting in an increased neutral region without spring load greater than 6 degrees in either or both rotational directions, for a total of 12 degrees.
- Binding
- Rattling noise
- Replace the flywheel if the conditions are present.
Procedure - Secondary to Primary Mass Axial Play Inspection
- Measure the axial displacement of the secondary flywheel mass.
- Replace the flywheel if the displacement is greater than 3.1 mm.
