Park Brake System Diagnosis

DEFINITION: This diagnostic table is designed to diagnose ONLY the components of the PARK brake system in order to determine if the PARK brake system is operating properly. You will be directed by the appropriate Symptom Table to go to other brake system diagnostic tables as appropriate.
1	Raise and support the vehicle with the rear axle supported by jack stands. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL. With the park brake RELEASED, attempt to rotate the rear wheels to check the rear brakes for a significant amount of drag. Do the rear brakes have a significant amount of drag?	Go to Step 4	Go to Step 2
2	Shift the transmission into NEUTRAL. Apply the park brake. Attempt to rotate the rear wheels to check the rear brakes for a significant amount of drag. Do the rear brakes have a significant amount of drag?	Go to Step 4	Go to Step 3
3	Are the electronic park brake actuators working?	Go to Step 10	Go to Step 5
4	Calibrate the park brake. Park Brake Calibration Do the rear brakes have a significant amount of drag?	Go to Step 5	Go to Step 10
5	Check the fuse of the electronic park brake. Visually inspect the electronic park brake actuators, the wiring harness and the electrical connectors. Visually inspect the electronic brake control module, the wiring harness and the electrical connector. Check the electronic park brake system with a scan tool. Did you find the condition?	Go to Step 6	Go to Step 7
6	Replace the fuse as necessary. Replace the wiring harness as necessary. Replace the park brake actuator switch as necessary. Parking Brake Actuator Switch Replacement Replace the parking brake actuators as necessary. Rear Parking Brake Actuator Replacement Did you correct the condition?	Go to Step 9	Go to Step 6
7	CAUTION: Do not depress the brake pedal with the brake rotors and/or the brake drums removed, or with the brake calipers repositioned away from the brake rotors, or damage to the brake system may result. Remove the rear disc brake pads. Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement Inspect the disc brake pads for looseness, damaged, broken or missing components. Check the brake caliper piston seals for cracks. Check the brake caliper pistons for movement. Check the electronic park brake actuators for a seized condition. Does the park brake hardware and/or the park brake actuators require replacement?	Go to Step 8	Go to Step 10
8	Replace the rear brake hardware components as necessary. Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement Replace the rear brake calipers as necessary. Rear Brake Caliper Replacement Did you complete the replacement?	Go to Step 9	-
