Removal Procedure
- Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement - Remove
- Camshaft Cover Replacement - Remove
- Remove the front wheelhouse liner - right side. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement (Chevrolet)Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement (Buick)
Adjust the engine to cylinder 1 top dead center (TDC) of combustion stroke. Set crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until the markings (1, 2) line up. Rotate at the crankshaft balancer bolt (3).
Install the EN-51367 holder (1).
- Timing Chain Upper Guide Replacement - Remove
- NOTE:
The actuator marks stands at 12 O'clock, if the cylinder 1 are on top dead center.
Check camshaft position actuator marks (1).
- Apply a color marking to the camshaft timing chain (1) marking to corresponding timing chain link.
Pre-Install the EN-51397-2 retainer (2) to the intake side of the camshaft timing chain (3).
- Install the EN-51397-1 retainer (5) to the exhaust side of the camshaft timing chain.
- Hand tighten the thumb wheels (1, 4) securely.
- Tighten the bolt (6) to 5 N.m (44 lb in).
Bolt(1)@Camshaft Position Actuator Loosen[2x]
- Remove the EN-51367 holder (1).
- Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
Remove the engine front cover hole plug (1) from the engine front cover (3).
- Remove the seal ring (2)
- NOTE:
Step 20.1 - 20.5 explain the mechanism of tensioner design 1.
Check through the engine front cover hole plug bore (2) which timing chain tensioner is installed.
- The timing chain tensioner design 1 is identified by the lever (3).
- The timing chain tensioner design 2 is identified by the release clip (1).
Slightly release tension from the piston (2) until bar (1) can be unlocked by rotating the lever (3) in direction of arrow.
Entirely push back the piston (1) until the tensioner Lever (2) cannot be locked in this position.
Release tension from the piston (1) until it releases for three ratchets. The three ratchets can be noticed by the click noises.
Apply tension to the piston until the lever (1) is rotated back into the locking position where the bore in the lever aligns with the bore in the tensioner housing.
- Fix the lever in this position with a suitable fixing pin (2).
- CAUTION:
The tightening force must be applied gently to the wrench. Using too much force will lead to an overlap of the timing chain that will cause severe engine damages.
NOTE:A second technician is required.
Install a suitable wrench (1) to the intake camshaft.
- Apply tension to the chain tensioner by slightly rotating the intake camshaft clockwise.
- NOTE:
The tensioner with design 2 must not be secured.
NOTE:The timing chain tensioner has now the lock position (1).
Secure the timing chain tensioner design 1 with a suitable fixing pin 3 mm (0.118 in).
Fix the EN-51397 - 2 retainer (1) to the intake side of the camshaft timing chain.
- Tighten the bolt (2) of the EN-51397 - 2 retainer to 5 N.m (44 lb in).
- Remove the wrench.
- NOTE:
The timing chain can be moved up and down between both camshaft position actuators.
Check chain slack, if not enough slack is gained, refer to detailed chain tensioner description from step 19 to 24. Apply and release tension to the chain tensioner.
Remove and DISCARD the intake camshaft position actuator bolt (1).
- Remove the intake camshaft position actuator (2)
Remove and DISCARD the exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt (1).
- Remove the exhaust camshaft position actuator (2)
Refer to Fastener Caution .
Follow Step 20.1 - 20.5 during rotation of the intake camshaft with tensioner design 1.
The camshaft timing chain will be hold by EN-51397-1 retainer.
The camshaft timing chain will be hold by EN-51397-1 retainer.
