Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2018 GMC Yukon XL, 2018 GMC Yukon, 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2018 Cadillac Escalade ESV, and 2018 Cadillac Escalade. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the J 21366  converter holding strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  2. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  3. Raise the transmission into place.
  4. Remove the J 21366  converter holding strap from the transmission.
  5. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter.

    The torque converter must rotate freely by hand.

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

  7. Install the 6 upper bolts (1) securing the transmission to the engine and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).

  9. Install the fuel feed line bracket retaining nut (1) and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  11. Install the vent tube bracket (3) to the transmission. Transmission Vent Hose Clip Bracket Replacement

  13. Install the 2 lower bolts (1) securing the transmission to the engine and tighten to 58 N.m (43 lb ft).
  14. Connect the transmission vent hoses.
  15. Install the wire harness to the transmission.
  16. Connect the transmission electrical connector to the transmission.

  18. Install the shift cable and range selector cable lever (2) to the transmission.
  19. Install the range selector cable lever nut (1). Automatic Transmission Range Selector Lever Cable Lever Replacement 
  20. Install the range selector cable retaining clip to the transmission range selector cable.

  22. If reusing the torque converter bolts, clean the bolt threads and apply threadlocker or equivalent to the threads prior to installation. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
  23. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts (1) and tighten to 63 N.m (46 lb ft).

  25. Install the right flywheel inspection cover (2) and bolt (1). Tighten the bolt to 9 N.m (89 lb in).
  26. Install the starter motor. Starter Replacement (L83, L86)

  28. Install the left flywheel inspection cover (2) and bolt (1). Tighten the bolt to 9 N.m (89 lb in).

  30. Install the torque converter access plug.
  31. Install the catalytic converter. Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement .

  33. Install the transmission support crossmember. Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2 WD)Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4 WD) .
  34. Remove the transmission jack.

  38. Lower the vehicle.
  39. Connect the negative battery cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Dual Battery)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Single Battery)
  40. Fill the transmission to the proper level. Transmission Fluid Fill Procedure .
  41. Perform the solenoid valve characterization. Solenoid Valve Characterization Reprogramming
  42. NOTE:

    The Service Fast Learn procedure must be performed when one of the following repairs have been made to the vehicle. Failure to perform the procedure after one of the following repairs may result in poor transmission performance, as well as transmission DTCs being set:

    The service fast learn procedure must be performed when any of the following repairs has been made to the transmission.

    • Pressure regulating solenoid replacement
    • Valve body repair or replacement
    • Any service/repair in response to a shift quality concern
    • Any internal transmission service, repair, overhaul, or replacement
    • Torque converter replacement
    • TCM replacement
    • Transmission assembly replacement
