Removal Procedure

- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
- Remove the transmission support crossmember. Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4 WD)
- Remove the transmission mount. Transmission Mount Replacement (Four Wheel Drive)
- Remove the catalytic converter. Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement
- Remove the torque converter access plug (1).
- Remove the left flywheel inspection cover bolt (1) and cover (2).
- Remove the starter motor. Starter Replacement (L83, L86)
- Remove the right flywheel inspection cover bolt (1) and cover (2).
- Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts (1).
- Disconnect the vent tube hoses and the electrical connections from the transfer case.
- Remove the vent tube bracket (3) from the transmission. Transmission Vent Hose Clip Bracket Replacement
- Remove the transfer case. Transfer Case Assembly Replacement
- Remove the bolt (1) that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission.
- Remove the range selector cable retaining clip from the transmission range selector cable.
- Remove the range selector cable lever nut (1). Automatic Transmission Range Selector Lever Cable Lever Replacement
- Remove the shift cable and range selector cable lever (2) from the transmission as an assembly.
- Disconnect the transmission electrical connector from the transmission.
- Remove the wire harness from the transmission.
- Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines (2) from the transmission. Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (L83 MYC)Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (L86 M5U)
- Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
- Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.
- Remove the fuel feed line bracket retaining nut (1).
- Remove the 6 upper bolts (1) securing the transmission to the engine.
- Remove the 2 lower bolts (1) securing the transmission to the engine.
- Pull the transmission straight back.
- Install the J 21366 converter holding strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
- Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
- Flush and flow test the transmission oil cooler and lines. Transmission Fluid Cooler Flow Test and Flushing (10L80)
NOTE:
Do Not remove the cable end from the range selector cable lever, if removed, the cable will break and will have to be replaced.
