Repair Information - Exhaust System

WARNING:
In order to avoid being burned, do not service the exhaust system while it is still hot. Service the system when it is cool.
WARNING:
Always wear protective goggles and gloves when removing exhaust parts as falling rust and sharp edges from worn exhaust components could result in serious personal injury.
CAUTION:
Do not bend the exhaust flex pipe more than 10 degrees in any direction. Bending of more than 10 degrees or twisting in a range of ± 0.5 degrees will damage the exhaust flex decoupler.
- Utmost accuracy must be ensured for all operations on the exhaust system. Each leakage at the exhaust system can lead to the fact that exhaust gases arrive into the interior - health hazard!
- Utmost accuracy must be ensured for all operations on the exhaust gas recirculation system. Each leakage at the exhaust gas recirculation system can lead to the fact that exhaust gases arrive into the interior - health hazard!
- Leakages (leak air) in the intake and exhaust system upstream from the catalytic converter result in incorrect oxygen sensor measurements.
- Leakages in the exhaust system result in incorrect exhaust pressure sensor measurements (vehicles with diesel particulate filter).
- Exercise utmost care during all operations on the secondary air system. Any leak in the secondary air system can cause damage to the catalytic converter and/or the engine.
- Repair information for oxygen sensors:
- Protect oxygen sensor from contact with silicon.
- Clean the oxygen sensor not with fuel or bring it in contact with it.
- When re-using oxygen sensor, coat thread with special grease.
- The thread of new oxygen sensors is already coated with special grease.
- Repair information for exhaust systems:
- Defective components of the exhaust system have to be replaced.
- Install the exhaust system free of tension and aligned according to the contours of the vehicle underbody.
- Exhaust system must be tightened in their original position.
- When replacing the exhaust system or individual components, use vehicle-approved parts only.
- Repair information for heat shields:
- Defective heat shields have to be replaced.
- Heat shields must be tightened in their original position.
- Heat shields may have only at the tightening points contact to the body. Otherwise an air gap between body and sheet metal must be present.
- No wax, underbody protection or similar substances may be laid on heat shields - fire danger!
- After conclusion of the work, check the exhaust system for leaks - visual inspection, audible inspection.
