Safety Regulations for Clutch and Transmission: General

- Country specific regulations for health, safety and environmental protection, as well as regulations in reference to easily ignitable materials must be adhered to at all times.
- Before performing operations involving the risk of an electrical short-circuit, the battery negative cable must be disconnected.
- When disconnecting wiring harness connectors, never pull on the wires themselves. Carefully disengage any wiring harness connector locking retainers and grasp the connector to disconnect.
- When removing or installing engines and/or transmissions, exercise extreme caution that all cable connections have been properly disconnected / connected before removal / installation. Starting the engine with disconnected or otherwise improperly connected cable connections can damage control modules.
- Never re-use seals, sealing-rings, O-rings and/or fuses. Use caution not to damage clips, snap-rings or other retainers / fasteners upon reassembly of components.
- When performing transmission repairs, always exercise the highest level of cleanliness with respect to all parts and tools used, to avoid transmission damage.
- Clean all disassembled parts and inspect for wear and damage. Inspect and make sure, that all grooves and seating surfaces are free from burrs, grit or damage.
- Only use the recommended sealant when assembling the transmission housing.
- Those transmission components, which must be coated with transmission fluid before assembly, can be found in the appropriate service manual.
- Use assembly lube on bearings, seals and sealing rings.
- Use only proper, GM-approved fluids. Do NOT re-use drained fluids.
- When disconnecting battery cables, certain electronic memory data will be erased (for example: electric windows and time and date). When reattaching the battery cables, this volatile memory must be reprogrammed, as well as affected audio components.
- Because transmission hydraulic systems are very susceptible to damage caused by dirt and other foreign bodies, the utmost of cleanliness MUST be observed at all times when working on transmission components. Failure to preserve cleanliness can result in loss of function, accelerated wear or other transmission damage.
- If it will not be possible to complete a repair in a timely manner, carefully cover all open or exposed parts.
- Inspect all parts for signs of wear and replace all worn parts.
- Parts which have been removed must be placed in a clean location and covered with film or other media, NOT a lint-producing cloth.
- Only reinstall parts which have been properly cleaned. To preserve cleanliness, only remove new parts from packaging shortly before installation.
