With automatic transmissions it is necessary to check the torque converter stall speed. In order to avoid transmission damage from the rapid transmission overheating that occurs during this procedure, this procedure may only be performed for a time span of a few seconds.
Due to the fact that during the converter stall speed inspection procedure the vehicle brakes alone must hold a great deal of force still, the vehicle drive wheels must be chocked. During the procedure, wheels and wheel chocks are to be monitored by a second person.
Before repairs to the automatic transmission, an inspection must be performed, using the proper diagnostic test equipment, following the instructions in the proper inspection manual.
Should, during repairs, clutch-plate material, metallic particles, dirt or other deposits be found in the automatic transmission fluid, the automatic transmission must typically be completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned, if the transmission may be disassembled, otherwise replace the complete transmission. Refer to the appropriate service information. All parts and oil passages must be blown clean and dried using compressed air.
