Intake and Exhaust Valve Components Removal

  1. Remove the spark plugs (1).

  2. Install the EN-6167-2  counter holder (1) into the spark plug hole, in position as shown.
  3. Install EN-6167-1  braces (2) and hold with EN-6167-2  support nut (3) to support the valves.

  4. Install both EN-49074  support braces (1) to the cylinder head and align both tools in an parallel position to each other.
    • Use washers between the special tool and cylinder head.
    • Hand-tighten bolts to cylinder head until the remaining special tool components are assembled.

  5. Install EN-49074  handle (2) to the EN-49074  sliding rods (1).
  6. Install the EN-49074  support brace adapters (3) to the sliding rods.
  7. Install EN-49155  demounting piece (4) to the EN-49074  handle (2).
  8. Install the EN-49074  handle (2), including the sliding rods (1), support brace adapters (3), and the EN-49155  demounting piece (4) into the EN-49074  support brace as shown.
  9. Tighten the hex nut at the EN-49074  handle.
  10. Tighten the EN-49074  support brace bolts and the cylinder head fixing bolts.
    11. NOTE:

    The demounting piece must be applied parallel to the valve to apply even pressure on the valve spring retainers, and prevent damage to the tools or the valve train components.

  11. Adjust the EN-49074  and EN-49155  demounting piece inline with the valve components.
  12. Tighten the EN-49074  support brace adapters.

  13. Position EN-49155  demounting piece properly to the valve spring retainer.
    14. WARNING:

    Compressed valve springs have high tension against the valve spring compressor. Valve springs that are not properly compressed by or released from the valve spring compressor can be ejected from the valve spring compressor with intense force. Use care when compressing or releasing the valve spring with the valve spring compressor and when removing or installing the valve stem keys. Failing to use care may cause personal injury.

    CAUTION:

    Do not compress the valve springs less than 25.0 mm (0.984 in). Contact between the valve spring retainer and the valve stem oil seal can cause potential valve stem oil seal damage.

    NOTE:
    • Many internal engine components will develop specific wear patterns on their friction surfaces.
    • Components MUST be separated, marked, or organized in a way to ensure installation to their original location and position. Take precautions in order to prevent interchanging of parts.
    • Tag or mark each part immediately when removed. Indicate location, direction, or orientation when necessary.
  14. Tighten EN-49074  handle to compress the valve spring and scale the upper valve spring retainer down until the valve keys are discharged from spring load. Use a suitable tool and a bit of grease to remove the valve keys (1).
  15. Loosen the EN-49074  handle to release the tension on the valve spring.

  16. Remove the 12 valve spring retainers (1), the 6 exhaust valve springs (2), and the 6 intake valve springs (2).
    17. CAUTION:

    Do not damage the valve guide. Remove any burrs that have formed at the key groove by chamfering the valve stem with an oil stone or a file.

  17. Using EN-840  pliers, remove the valve stem oil seals (3). Discard all used seals and replace with new.

  18. Remove the EN-6167-2  counter holder and the EN-6167-1  brace.
    19. NOTE:

    Components MUST be separated, marked, or organized in a way to ensure installation to their original location and position. Take precautions in order to prevent interchanging of parts.

  19. Remove the 6 exhaust valves (1) and the 6 intake valves (2) from the cylinder head.
  20. Remove the EN-49074  valve spring compressor kit and EN-49155  demounting piece from the cylinder head.
