Intake and Exhaust Valve Components Installation
- Ensure that the valve train components will be installed in their original position.
- Lubricate the valve guides and the valve stems with engine oil.
- Install 2 exhaust valves (1) and 2 intake valves (2) at a time, along with EN-6167 , in the cylinder head until all valves are installed.
- Install the EN-6167-2 counter holder (1) into the spark plug hole, in position as shown.
- Install EN-6167-1 braces (2) and hold with EN-6167-2 support nut (3) to support the valves.
- Valve stem oil seal sets will contain 2 different colored seals, black and green. The set of 8 seals that are green go on the exhaust valves.
- Ensure the valve stem oil seals do not deform during installation.
- Force should only be applied to the valve spring contact area of the new valve stem oil seal during installation.
- Use a suitable tool to carefully push the NEW valve stem oil seals (3) into position, until the seal positively locks on the guide.
- Lubricate the valve stem and valve guide ID with clean engine oil. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers (Europe LV7)Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers (Europe L5Q) .
- Install 6 exhaust valve springs (2), 6 intake valve springs (2), and 12 valve spring retainers (1).
- Install both EN-49074
support braces (1) to the cylinder head and align both tools in an parallel position to each other.
- Use washers between the special tool and cylinder head.
- Hand-tighten bolts to cylinder head until the remaining special tool components are assembled.
- Install EN-49074 handle (2) to the EN-49074 sliding rods (1).
- Install the EN-49074 support brace adapters (3) to the sliding rods.
- Install EN-49155 demounting piece (4) to the EN-49074 handle (2).
- Install the EN-49074 handle (2), including the sliding rods (1), support brace adapters (3), and the EN-49155 demounting piece (4) into the EN-49074 support brace as shown.
- Tighten the hex nut at the EN-49074 handle.
- Tighten the EN-49074 support brace bolts and the cylinder head fixing bolts.
- Adjust the EN-49074 and EN-49155 demounting piece inline with the valve components.
- Tighten the EN-49074 support brace adapters.
- Position EN-49155 demounting piece properly to the valve spring retainer.
- Tighten EN-49074 handle to compress the valve spring and scale the upper valve spring retainer down until the valve keys can be installed. Use a suitable tool and a bit of grease to install the valve keys (1).
- Slowly loosen the EN-49074 handle to release the tension on the valve spring.
- Inspect for proper valve key seating.
- Repeat the procedure for the remaining valves.
- Remove the EN-6167-2 counter holder and the EN-6167-1 brace.
- Remove the EN-49074 valve spring compressor kit and EN-49155 demounting piece from the cylinder head.
- Install the spark plugs (1). Tighten to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).
Components MUST be separated, marked, or organized in a way to ensure installation to their original location and position. Take precautions in order to prevent interchanging of parts.
The demounting piece must be applied parallel to the valve to apply even pressure on the valve spring retainers, and prevent damage to the tools or the valve train components.
Compressed valve springs have high tension against the valve spring compressor. Valve springs that are not properly compressed by or released from the valve spring compressor can be ejected from the valve spring compressor with intense force. Use care when compressing or releasing the valve spring with the valve spring compressor and when removing or installing the valve stem keys. Failing to use care may cause personal injury.
Do not compress the valve springs less than 25.0 mm (0.984 in). Contact between the valve spring retainer and the valve stem oil seal can cause potential valve stem oil seal damage.
