Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement (L5Q) .
  2. Adjust the engine to cylinder 1 top dead center (TDC) of combustion stroke. Set crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until the markings (1, 2) line up. Rotate at the crankshaft balancer bolt (3).

  3. Install the EN 51632  camshaft locking tool (1).

  4. If the EN 51632  camshaft locking tool (1) can be installed, the engine timing is properly adjusted.
    NOTE: The marks of the camshaft position actuator must be positioned approximately at 12 O'Clock position.
  5. If the EN 51632  camshaft locking tool (1) can't be installed, rotate the crankshaft as long the EN 51632  camshaft locking tool can be installed.
  6. Check the position of the crankshaft. The crankshaft must be set to TDC, the arrow (1) on the crankshaft balancer and the arrow (2).

  7. If the arrows (1, 2) do not align, set the engine to TDC, refer to step 2.
  8. Remove the EN 51632  camshaft locking tool (1).

  9. Remove the timing chain upper guide. Refer to Timing Chain Upper Guide Replacement .
  10. Install the EN-51691-1  timing chain retainer (1) to the exhaust side camshaft timing chain (3) and hand tighten the bolt.

  11. Loosely install the EN-51691-2  timing chain retainer (2) to the intake side camshaft timing chain (3).
  12. Tighten the exhaust side timing chain retainer (1) bolt to 5 N.m (44 lb in).
    CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution .
  13. Install a suitable wrench (2) to the intake camshaft.

  14. Rotate the wrench clockwise to put some pressure on the timing chain tensioner.
  15. Hold the wrench 20 - 30 seconds.
    NOTE: Hold the wrench so that the pressure of the timing chain tensioner can release slowly.
  16. Release tension of the timing chain tensioner.
  17. Fix the timing chain tensioner it that position.
  18. Remove the wrench.
  19. Remove the intake camshaft position actuator bolt (1).

  20. Remove the intake camshaft position actuator (2).
    NOTE: The camshaft timing chain will be held by EN 51691  timing chain retainer.
  21. Adjust the camshaft position actuators until EN 51632  camshaft locking tool (1) can be installed.
