Circuit/System Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2017 Chevrolet Spark. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Verify the fuse is not open: F06 Fuse-X50A Fuse Block - Underhood
    • If the fuse is open

Test the Transmission Control Module Clutch Solenoid Enable A circuit, 5V Reference circuit and all components connected to the 5V Reference circuit for a short to ground.

    • If the fuse is not open
  2. Ignition Off
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector: B296A Transmission Pulley Speed Sensor - Primary
  4. Test for less than 10 Ω between the test points: Low Reference circuit terminal 1 & Chassis Ground or Test for less than 50 Ω between the test points: Low Reference circuit terminal 1 & Battery Ground
    NOTE:
    • Testing for steps 4 to 7 is performed on the component side of the inline harness connector: B296A Transmission Pulley Speed Sensor - Primary Diagnostic Test Probe= J-35615-64B
    • Resistance Chassis Ground - Battery Ground=15 to 35 Ω.
    • If 10 Ω or greater - Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
    • If less than 10 Ω
  5. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode & Engine - Off
  6. Using a 3 A fused jumper wire, Test for B+(-0.5) to B+ V between the test points: 5 V Reference circuit terminal 3 & Low Reference circuit terminal 1.
    • If less than the specified range

Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit

    • If in the specified range
  7. Test for B+ (+0.0/-2.5 V) between the sensor signal circuit terminal 2 and the low reference terminal 1.
    • If less than the specified range
    1. Ignition Off. Disconnect the electrical connector: X1-K71 Transmission Control Module
    2. Test for less than 10 Ω in the sensor signal circuit end to end.
      • If 10 Ω or greater - Repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 10 Ω
    3. Test for infinite resistance between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 2 & Chassis Ground
      • If less than infinite resistance - Repair the short to ground on the circuit.
      • If infinite resistance
    4. Test for infinite resistance between the test points: Signal circuit terminal 2 & all other terminals of the B296A Transmission Pulley Speed Sensor - Primary harness connector.
      • If less than infinite resistance - Repair the short between the circuits.
      • If infinite resistance
    5. Connect the red lead of the J-38522  variable signal generator to the sensor signal circuit terminal 2. Connect the black lead of the J-38522  variable signal generator to the low reference circuit terminal 1. Plug the power cord of the J-38522  variable signal generator into the cigar lighter.
    6. Set the J-38522  variable signal generator to 12 volts, the Frequency to 300 and the Duty Cycle to 50%.
    7. Ignition - On / Vehicle - In Service Mode
    8. Verify the scan tool parameter: Primary Pulley Speed = 540 to 660 RPM
      • If not between 540 and 660 RPM. Replace the component: K71 Transmission Control Module
      • If between 540 and 660 RPM test the component: K71 Transmission Control Module. Refer to Component Testing
    • If in the specified range
  8. Replace the component: B296A Transmission Pulley Speed Sensor - Primary
