Installation Procedure

    Install the engine front cover hole plug (1) to the engine front cover (2) and tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

    Gently tap coiled spring pins (1) back into front cover so they are flush with front cover sealing surface.

    NOTE:
    • The engine front cover surface must be free of contamination prior to applying the sealer.
    • Install and align the cover within 20 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • The cover must be fastened to final torque specification within 20 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • Additional sealant is necessary to reduce the possibility of leakage where the cylinder head to engine block interface along the bead path flange on the front cover.

    Apply a 4 mm bead of sealer directly in the flange of the engine front cover perimeter mating surface.

  4. Apply a 3 mm bead of sealer circling 3 locations on the interior of the engine front cover.
  5. Apply a 3 mm bead of sealant at the 2 horizontal groove locations along the flange where the cylinder head and engine block mate. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers (Europe L5Q)Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers (North America L5Q)
  6. NOTE:

    Hand start the engine front cover bolts. Torque to specification when all front cover bolts and the stud are installed hand-tight.

  7. Install the 11 engine front cover bolts (4) and tighten to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
  8. Install the engine front cover stud (3) and tighten to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).
  9. NOTE:

    This interior M6 bolt is longer than the perimeter M6 bolts.

  10. Install the 1 engine front cover bolt (2) and tighten to 15 N.m (11 lb ft).

    Install the 1 engine front cover bolt (5) and tighten the bolts in the sequence shown.

    • Tighten the bolts a first pass to 5 N.m (44 lb in)
    • Tighten the bolts a final pass to 58 N.m (43 lb ft)

    NOTE:

    The oil seal must be installed in the correct direction. The side that faces out will have "this side out" printed on it. The design of the seal determines which end of the EN-51368  installer is used. Use the end of the installer that matches the design of the seal, as shown.

    Lubricate the outside diameter of the new crankshaft seal with clean engine oil

  13. Determine which end of the EN-51368  installer will be used and install the seal on it.
  14. Install the EN-51368  installer over the crankshaft.
  15. Install the EN-51368  screw, large washer, bearing, and nut.
  16. Counter-hold the screw, and tighten the nut to install the seal.
  17. Install the engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement .

    Install the air conditioning evaporate hose assembly bracket nut (1) and the air conditioning evaporate hose assembly bracket (2) and tighten to 19 N.m (14 lb ft).

  19. Remove the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
  20. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  21. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement (L5Q) .
  22. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement .
  23. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  24. Install the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement .
