Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (KL9)
  2. Remove Throttle Body Assembly. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement
  3. Remove Camshaft Housing. Refer to Camshaft Housing Replacement 
  4. Remove Crankshaft Pulley. Refer to Crankshaft Pulley Replacement 
  5. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle

  6. Check the Top Dead Center (TDC) position to locate the correct camshaft sprocket bolt (2) that is to be removed first.
  7. Check if the bores (1) are aligned.
  8. If the bores are aligned, raise the vehicle.

  9. Install the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts (1).
  10. Rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees in direction of arrow. Use a suitable flat bladed tool.
  11. Lower the vehicle.

  12. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt (2) from the intake camshaft sprocket (1). Counterhold with a wrench at the camshaft hexagon.
  13. Raise the vehicle.

  14. Rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees in direction of arrow. Use a suitable flat bladed tool at the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts (1).
  15. Remove the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts (1).

  16. Install the EN-51140  fixing tool (2).
  17. Install the fixing pin into the engine block bore (1) and tighten the 2 bolts (3).
  18. Lower the vehicle.

  19. Remove the 4 camshaft bearing rear cap bolts (1).
  20. Remove the camshaft bearing rear cap (2).

  21. Mark the backside of both cam gears with paint marks (1).

  22. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt (2) from the camshaft sprocket (1). Counterhold with a wrench at the camshaft hexagon.

  23. Install the EN-51188  fixing tool (2) to fix the camshaft sprocket (1).
  24. Install the 2 bolts (3).

  25. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt (2) from the camshaft sprocket (1). Counterhold with a wrench at the camshaft hexagon.

  26. Slide the camshaft sprocket (1) over the pin (2) of the EN-51188  fixing tool in arrow direction.

  27. Install the EN-50509  fixing tool (1) to the exhaust camshaft sprocket (2).

  28. Loosen the 8 intake camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence as shown.

    NOTE:

    Note the direction of the arrows (3) on the camshaft bearing caps pointing to outside of the cylinder head.

  29. Remove the 8 intake camshaft bearing cap bolts (1).
  30. Remove the 4 intake camshaft bearing caps (2) and lay aside in the order as they were removed.

  31. Remove the intake camshaft (1).
  32. Cover the timing case with a lint free cloth.
