Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
    NOTE:

    Before installing the camshaft timing chain, check the components of the timing chain system for damage and wear.

  1. Check the components of the timing chain system for damage and wear:
    • Timing chain guides with plastic attachment
    • Timing chain tensioner and timing chain tensioner shoe with plastic attachment
    • Timing chain and all timing chain sprockets
    • Oil pump sprocket
    • Oil pump drive chain tensioner

  3. Re-cut thread at cylinder head and engine block for the 2 timing chain upper guide bolts (2).
  4. Install Timing Chain Upper Guide (1)
  5. NOTE:

    The tightening procedure of the timing chain upper guide bolts should be completed within 10 minutes.

  6. Apply thread lock agent to the upper timing chain upper guide bolt (2).
  7. NOTE:

    Do not tighten the upper timing chain upper guide bolt before the camshaft timing chain is installed.

  8. Install the upper timing chain upper guide bolt (2).

  10. Install the timing chain with the marked chain links as shown and follow the installation sequence:
    1. Install the timing chain in the first step to the fuel injection pump sprocket (2).
    2. Install the timing chain in the second step to the camshaft sprocket (1).
    3. Install the timing chain in the final step to the timing chain idler sprocket (3).

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution

  12. Apply thread lock agent to the lower timing chain upper guide bolt (3). Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 
  13. Install and tighten Timing Chain Upper Guide Bolt (3) to 11 N.m (97 lb in)
  14. Tighten Timing Chain Upper Guide Bolt (1) to 11 N.m (97 lb in)

  16. Install Timing Chain Lower Guide (1)
  17. Install and tighten Timing Chain Lower Guide Bolts (2) (Qty: 2) to 10 N.m (89 lb in)

  19. Install Timing Chain Tensioner Shoe (1)
  20. Install and tighten Timing Chain Tensioner Shoe Bolt (2) to 25 N.m (18 lb ft)

  22. Remove EN-50513  Pin (2)

  24. Remove EN-51143  Fixing Tool (1)
  25. Raise the vehicle.

  27. Remove Bolts (3) (Qty: 2)
  28. Remove EN-51143  Fixing Tool (2)

  30. Install Crankshaft Pulley Bolts (1) (Qty: 4)

    Rotate the crankshaft 720 degrees in direction of arrow. Use a pry bar at the 4 crankshaft pulley bolts (1).

  31. Remove Crankshaft Pulley Bolts (1) (Qty: 4)

  33. Install EN-51140  Fixing Tool (2)
  34. Install Bolts (3) (Qty: 2)
  35. Lower the vehicle.

  37. Install EN-51143  Fixing Tool (1)
  38. If the fixing pin does not fit into the camshaft sprocket bore, the camshaft timing must be adjusted. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain Adjustment 
  39. Remove EN-51143  Fixing Tool (1)
  40. Raise the vehicle.

  42. Remove Bolts (3) (Qty: 2)
  43. Remove EN-51140  Fixing Tool (2)

  45. Install Crankshaft Pulley (1). Refer to Crankshaft Pulley Replacement

  47. Install Timing Chain Lower Cover (2). Refer to Timing Chain Lower Cover Replacement

  49. Install Oil Pan (2). Refer to Oil Pan Replacement

  52. Install Transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement (Front Wheel Drive)Transmission Replacement (All Wheel Drive)

  54. Remove Engine Lift Bracket Bolt (2)
  55. Remove Engine Lift Bracket - Left Side (1) @ Cylinder Head

  57. Remove Engine Lift Bracket Bolt (2)
  58. Remove Engine Lift Bracket - Right Side (1) @ Cylinder Head

  60. Install Timing Chain Upper Cover (2). Refer to Timing Chain Upper Cover Replacement

  63. Install Oxidation Catalytic Converter. Refer to Oxidation Catalytic Converter Replacement (LH7)
