Removal Procedure
- Release the parking brake. If equipped with electric parking brake, set into service mode. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Replacement .
If the vehicle equipped with a one time adjusting parking brake system, release the tension of the parking brake cables. Firmly grasp and hold the retaining beam (3) and push forward the release latch (2), using a suitable screwdriver. Pull back the retaining beam (3) as far as possible and loose the release latch (2).
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
- Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
- Remove the rear V-rod underbody brace. Refer to Underbody Brace Replacement - Rear V-Rod .
Remove the rear wheel speed sensors (1), removing the bolts (2) from the rear brake caliper brackets. Hang the sensors aside.
Remove both parking brake cables (1) from the rear brake calipers, removing the retainers (2).
Remove brake hose bolts (1) attaching the hoses to the rear brake caliper brackets.
If equipped with manual parking brake. Remove rear parking brake cable bracket bolts (1) from the rear axle.
Remove the rear brake caliper upper bolt (1) and vibration damper and stud assembly (3).
- Without disconnecting the flexible brake hose, remove the rear brake caliper (2) from the vehicle and secure it using a heavy mechanics wire or equivalent.
Remove the equalizer beam link bolts (1).
- If equipped, remove the headlamp leveling rear suspension height sensor. Refer to Headlamp Leveling Rear Suspension Height Sensor Replacement .
- If equipped, remove the headlamp leveling rear suspension height sensor exciter plate. Refer to Headlamp Leveling Rear Suspension Height Sensor Exciter Plate Replacement .
Support the rear axle near the shock absorber by using a hydraulic jack.
- Remove and DISCARD the lower shock absorber bolt (2).
- Repeat the procedure on the other side.
Lower the jack and remove the 2 rear springs (1).
Remove and DISCARD the 8 rear axle bracket bolts (1) from the right and left rear axle brackets.
Remove the rear coil spring lower seat insulators (1) from the axle.
Remove and DISCARD the rear axle bushing bolts and nuts (1) from the rear axle (2).
- Transfer parts as necessary. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .
Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.
